How long have you lived there?

Start locking your doors properly. If you think your door lock is not substantial enough, fit another and fit bolts.

You are also allowed to purchase pepper spray.

Tell your neighbour (who seems to know more than they are letting on) that you have taken steps to protect yourself AND you have been to the police station and reported it.

It's b0ll0cks that you have to report it as it happens.

I'd definitely go and report it.
I live here almost two years. Haven't been at the police yet. I think nobofy is going to back my story up.

Hello everybody

I am a foreigner living with my husband in switzerland. I decided to ask for advice here. I was alone at home on Saturday ( my husband is currently in another country) and i went to bed but didn't fall asleep right away.

at 1 a.m. someone drove on a motorcycle in front of the house.i live in a wooden house, upper floor.then i heard someone climbing up the stairs. i had no idea what was going on. after that a man started slamming the door saying open.
I was in bedroom paralized i could not move from shock. my phone was not with me and i was afraid to go the living room to take it. because the doors are ordinary i knew someone could easily open it with basic key. and the main entrance doors were open because we never ever locked them.
i didnt see what the person looked like, nothing. after being awake all night first thing in the morning i went to the neighbour who lives beneath me. told her everything she pretended that she didnt hear anything. I wanted to call the local police station she said in switzerland you can't call after only at the exact moment when something happens.
this never happened before. I was scared for my life.

What can i do about this? Does anyone know? thank you
As in any country - anywhere, you do need to make sure that the main door is locked and secure.

The majority of apartments here have "Kaba" locks, which help to secure against this kind of thing, and which are normally provided in a rental apartment i.e. no key is the same, and cannot be legally replicated without the consent of the landlord.

I'm not really understanding why you have such a simple lock. If you have deep concerns then you really must go to the authorities.

What's that supposed to mean?
Pardon myEnglish,
I'm quite schocked so make written mistakes. what I wanted to say is doors inside a house are very easy to open even apartment doors.

Lesson learned: lock the main door, at least during the night.
It' s learned, definetly

Lesson learned: lock the main door, at least during the night.
There is a notice on the inside of our main building front door to say it will be locked from 9pm & it is.

Living in a central Town it makes sense, as one never knows who might enter, possibly by mistake.

When we lived in rural mountain in the winter, only remember once the front door was locked. The difference being, anyone could be seen for long distances & there was difficulty for visitors to park near our building.

Re: Someone knocked on my door at 1 am

juradee, I can see that you found the experience rather frightening; it's not always easy being a woman alone, even if it's only occasionally!

There are several things you can do.
Firstly;
Firstly, write down what happened, then go and see the police about the incident. They might not be able to file a report as it happened a couple of days ago and there are no witnesses, but they will make a note of it and probably ask one of their patrol cars to keep an eye open in the area for a while.
Explain that you're on your own when your husband's away and ask if it's possible for someone to come to your flat and discuss security.
They'll certainly suggest keeping the main door locked, especially after dark. Although that might require your neighbours cooperation.

Then;
Ask the owner/letting agents about the possibility of fitting a second lock to the front door of your apartment, and/or a chain.
Always remember to take your phone with you when you go to bed (make sure it's charged)!
Buy a whistle, if someone does break in a sudden loud noise should scare them off.
Maybe get a motion detector for the hallway/living room. A battery operated one will do. Again, something that makes a noise.
Make sure the downstairs neighbour knows when you're on your own, they might not realise that your husband's away.

I live on my own in a house in the middle of nowhere (my husband is working away for a few years and is rarely here), so I can sympathise; you've had a nasty fright but it was almost certainly just some drunken idiot who muddled up his building with yours. And I suspect the neighbour knows who it is but doesn't want to get them into trouble.
Don't let this one incident take over your life, it'll almost certainly never happen again!

It looks like your neighbour knows more than what she told you...it could have been her drunk ex or whatever who knocked on your door by mistake...
The thing is if she hasn't been willing to talk with you she probably won't say anything to the police, and if they decide to come over and take a look first people they ask are the neighbours, I should think.
Maybe it is better to discuss with her about locking the entrance doors at all times.
I think the OP has a great argument aka conspiracy theory to nail the neighbour on the EF. Drunken neighbour's ex on motorbike calling to open the door at night. It surely won't come unnoticed by the expat who's gonna get the neighbour. Especially, when those threads about the noise complaints from neighbours pop up again - keep your winner card ...

OK, it could have been her long lost son, the black sheep of the family who occasionally gets drunk and goes to mom to ask for some money. Or the milkman who just remembered he didn't get payed last time. Or the postman who forgot to ahem, hand her a letter....which one do you choose?

OP, don't pay attention to us. I know you must be really scared but there is a very high probability that no-one is out there to get you and it was just an one-off weird encounter with drunkards. Whatever your neighbour's relation to the said drunkard might be.

This expat is living her own life not the neighbours.

Greetings...

The main thing is to try to keep calm and think positive. It happened once, it was an accident. Otherwise you will get crazy in your own home, thinking this guy might come back.
And, it is a pity the neighbour wasn't sincere with you. Probably she had a reason, but it doesn't help you at all.

first paragraph-good job scherlock
second one- it's more likely that it's an unfortunate situation when young expat stays alone for 10 days. there are some sick people out there

Re: Someone knocked on my door at 1 am

I think your neighbour is selling you a line of BS there.

If it puts your mind at ease, report it to the police even after the fact. Maybe there is not much they can do - on the other hand there may be a local spate of similar incidents that they are investigating. Or perhaps the perp is someone known to the police already.

Take a friend who can speak the language along to the station to help with making the report.

Cheers,
Nick

I agree with you about my neighbour. This is a small village of around 800 inhabitants. Thanks a lot for all the advice I'm going to think about it. Maybe I'll wait for my husband to come back because right now all I feel is fear.

Re: Someone knocked on my door at 1 am

strange story.

Did they say 'open!' or 'öffne!'?

Are you and/or your husband native english speakers, and it's known by the inhabitants of your little village? - as in, if they said 'open', were they there specifically at your door and it wasn't a case of going to the wrong door?

It was öffne, one person. slamming the doors and screaming he said that. not native english speakers. I would say we are known as there are just a few expats, mostly locals. I doubt it was a case of going to the wrong door.
