First visit!

Too excited not to share!

This may not be the best time, financially (I'm now between jobs after being downsized) but seems like a good time life-wise.

We're taking our first trip to Switzerland! 8 Days of Zürich coming in November get to bring both kiddos as well. (Announcer voice: This trip made possible by... Severance. Severance, it's not enough, but it's close.™

Going to try and work a little bit of networking/job hunting into the mix as well which means I need to get on with the portfolio building.

We were starting to give up on the dream of moving permanently, I think this will be a much needed reminder of what we're hoping for.

Re: First visit!

Does it have to be November?

A November trip might not showcase Switzerland well. Summer attractions generally close at the end of October, many mountain cable cars close down for the month for maintenance. The weather is usually grey, grey, rainy, cold, and grey.

You can do city things, museums and such - but unless you are very lucky with the weather your outdoor options may be some what limited. Do plan ahead for activities to keep your kids busy.

Then again, if the primary goal is to scout out a possible move, perhaps a November trip is a good idea. You will see Switzerland arguably at it's least attractive and so will be less dazzled by the mountain magic/myth, likely you'll see the country with a healthy dose of realism.

All the best to you and your family!

Thanks, Meloncollie!

That is a part of my reasoning; I did give BakrGrl the option of going in the spring but she had the same thought, I think.

Good tips though on the cable cars and attractions, that thought hadn't crossed my mind as much. The kids love museums though so I'm thinking we'll do well enough without the full-blown tourism machine.

Re: First visit!

While we're coming over is there anyone who'd be interested in meeting up with us? We'd love to make some acquaintances in the country, especially if anyone has kids around our's in age (6 and 9).

Are there any non-touristy things or local staples we should go look for? Are there any day trips from Zurich we should make even in November?

Thanks
