White Noise Machine

Hello,

I am trying to find a white noise machine to buy in Zürich for my baby who is a very light sleeper. I have found a few on the German Amazon site, but I would prefer to buy in Switzerland if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks!

There are various free white noise apps, maybe see if any work for you? Alternatively try classical music, there are even various "baby friendly" cd collections around. Stick to strings, not too much percussion and brass!

Re: White Noise Machine

Thanks! We are going to try a white noise app on an old phone, but were thinking one of the dedicated white noise generators could be better. I hadn't thought of CD's, I will take a look at this!

You want pink noise, not white.

Re: White Noise Machine

Actually I use 'white noise' almost every night.Mostly to drown out people talking in the apartments next door.Works a treat.
I purchased a Cube Clock radio with a USB port. Then I downloaded a 60 minute white noise track onto a USB stick. This could be the sound of a fan, or the sound of waves on the beach.
Plug the USB stick into the clock radio and put on repeat. Then it runs the whole night unless you stop it.
I sleep really well with this.

Natural sounds like waves or waterfalls are pink noise, not white noise.

White noise is nasty.

I don't think you can rule out any music or sound that may help a baby settle and sleep. My wife did a lot of (bike) spinning classes when pregnant so a bit of drum and bass always helped the little guy to sleep especially when there was other noise around. Maybe if their was particular music or sounds around when you were pregnant this could help. Sounds bad but a sweaty gym tshirt under the pillow can help so they sense your near by smell.

True enough. Little Rufus did a lot of napping to Goo Goo Dolls, The Wallflowers and Counting Crows.

What is the difference between pink and white noise?
White noise has equal power per hertz throughout all frequencies, while the power per hertz in pink noise decreases as the frequency increases. As a result, the lower frequencies in pink noise are louder and have more power than the higher frequencies.

Pink noise has equal energy per octave, which means that all octaves have the same energy (power).

White noise has equal energy per frequency, which means that most of the energy is at high frequencies, even beyond the audible range, which can do bad things to your ears even if you can't hear it.

In other words, for the audible range, there is as much energy in the 10k-20k octave, as in all other octaves combined. 90% of all the energy is at 1k or above.

Not a good thing.

Re: White Noise Machine

see if you can locate an old CB Radio or test one of those 2 way FM walky talkies to see if they have squelch knob. Lower the squelch all the way and you'll get the "original" White noise. I recommend more the FM walky talking as CB is AM and the White noise there may be a bit "noisey" and lets "White".

I have a FM walky talky ( it's a ham radio 'walky talky") at my bed side, I Keep it with the squelch all the way down so as soon I hear our Baby stir/make noise I flip it on - works wonders and has been one our most valued-sleep Tools our Baby. And funny part is my wife and I also fall asleep with it on, you don't have to Keep the volume high at all, just enough where it becomes soothing to the Baby and us.

We take in with us when we go out to dinner (we put it in his stroller, at low volume, no one can really hear and it keeps him out).

We tried the White noise app but that didn't work, one app that is somewhat effectiveness is called the Baby Shusher - worth a try for your Baby.

Cheers and good luck.
