Anyway many places do this and I agree that best practice suggests sending a URL to allow you to reset the password. But they're not storing the password in plain text. | | | | | No, since they could retrieve and send my password in plain text, that means that they also store it in plain text.
If they had hashed it, they would have had to reset the password, since it is impossible to retrieve the original password (unless you use rainbow tables..)
I was quite happy when I bought a printer from them though, but I really don't like this.

digitec.ch is great. I've bought lots of stuff privately or for friends from them and I have never ever had problems with know-how, returns or deliveries from them.
I don't normally defend shops or institutions, but digitec has been really OK, so i have to stand up for them this time. I have used their branches in Winterthur, Zurich and Dietikon. Hope your bad experience led to someone being removed, since it doesn't make sense to have such bad service on that occasion.

i've used many companies like digitec before and tend to find that when things work, they work great, but as soon as you have a problem which doesn't fit into their next automated workflow, it can be a nightmare.

By your logic, every website stores passwords in plain text ..... otherwise how could the system validate the entered password when you log in? think about it..... they have a hash they are using to securely store the password.
do you know how long rainbow tables take to create? It is fine for NTLM as someone has produced them and you can find them.
Oh and what if they salt them? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow...rainbow_tables
You have done well to hear of these things but you cannot categorically suggest anything due to not knowing the setup. What I can tell you is that these webapps will not function properly without them effectively having the key to their own front door (so the hash and the salt).
And Phil - if you have no experience, especially returns, with Digitec then your post adds no value. They will happily RMA stuff....some of the manufacturer processes supporting Digitec (and every other store) can be problematic (see camera threads ) |

I have nothing but praise for Digitec having bought just about all my tech stuff from them over the last 3 years - never an issue, no problems with post sales service - and if they store password in plain I'll eat my hat (and it's not a even a tasty hat).

Yes, just use the forgotten password form and you'll see what I mean.
This is inexcusable for an online store, regardless of the fact that you should not use the same password on different accounts.
edit: I've also got no answer on my deletion request for the account.

| | | | |
1. User registers with site, provides a password.
2. System encrypts password using a one-way function, stores encrypted password only.
3. User returns, re-enters password
4. System encrypts password from step 3 using the same mechanism as in step 2, and compares the results of the encryption with the stored encrypted copy. If they match, the user is authenticated, if they don't match the password was wrong.
With this system the website backend never stores a plain text copy of your password, and, if you forget it, they can't provide it to you. |

Just to add my pov, I have used Digitec on several occasions and had no problems at all. Even when i ordered wrong products and returned them i got a full refund, with no questions asked. As long as packages are returned unopened a full refund is given, less costs. |

I ordered 3 seperate times from Digitec in December and they have all been good.
I accidently ordered the wrong item one time, and they had no prob in me returningit & the right one was sent out.
Will definitely use them again.

I've also been a regular customer at Digitec, and have found them to be very efficient. Claiming a guarantee has also not been a problem, and their free delivery option is very useful. The only thing I don't like is that if you choose to pay by credit-card there's an extra credit-card fee on top.

I have also ordered many things from Digitec without problem. everything has arrived on time. They even advised me to buy a cheaper product once, when I wasn't sure about the difference between two versions of it.
I have bought from other web sites with a swiss credit card and had problems. But when I complain to the swiss credit card, I was either offered my money back or the company concerned soon delivered the goods.
I find the system works really well here.

| | | Re: What's your experience with digitec.ch?
can anyone show me their return policy?
i'm looking at getting a camera lens from them but sometimes it takes a copy or two to find a "sharp" lens copy that best fits with my camera body. in other words, i may have to bring back a purchase and exchange it for another one, worst case.
can't find their return policy, at least in english, on their site. any help would be great.

Try looking on there website.. returns policy is quite clear. I suggest you go to a shop, try the lens there, then decide. Or go to Digitec, and try it in the shop before you buy.. | Quote: | | | | | can anyone show me their return policy?

| | | Re: What's your experience with digitec.ch? | Quote: | | | | | And if you absolutely have to buy something from digitec don't go there with a car expecting to find a place to park. They only have 4 parking spaces in front of their establishment and the park house is closed to the public which leaves you parking illegally like the other 15 cars did. They have a private police which runs over to your car while you're inside of digitec and attaches a 60.-chf. fine to your windscreen..!! I sent a (polite) email to them expressing my displeasure in their parking situation, of course no answer was received from them. Oh well, learned an expensive lesson in how much they care about their customers so I will NEVER go to digitec again..!
(pssst.. Steg Computer in Dietikon has lots of free parking for their customers) | | | | | there is a parking in about 10m distance from those spaces!
"and the park house is closed to the public" -> not true.
park your car outside the parking lots and getting a fine when there is a parking so near is simply your problem.

I found them good. have used them to buy camera, laptop, mobile phones. Have never encountered any problems so far!
Fairly priced, though interdiscount etc during sale also have competetive prices.

Just call them with your order number. They mostly speak English and certainly will understand.
