Not sure. Try some UK sites. If you order enough online they will post free of cost to Europe. Maybe holland and barett!!!

In German supermarkets they sell different kinds of fish oil, ie salmon liver oil and oil from different types of fish that I assume have the same properties as cod liver oil, but not cod liver oil. Visit your local pharmacy.

I think it's because Lebertran is a source of trauma and maybe considered a leftover from our grandparents?
But this pharmacy has it so I guess others will too.

buy yourself a lil boat and go off fishing for the day... Thats about all i can suggest. Not in Switzerland as you will have to tax and insure your boat and buy a permit ect ect. And not that Im an expert but i think cod only live in the sea... well until they get caugt cooked and their oil processed into tablettes for us lazy humans to go and "buy" Im using my above average intelligence to guess that cod liver oil comes from cod.. correct me if im wrong though. |

I also wanted real cod liver oil, not the terrible tasting stuff, but freshly pressed oil. I found it at healthspan.co.uk, shipping is 2 pounds I think. They have bottled oil, and it was tested to not contain mercury, pcb and dioxins. I am not related to them, but I spent such a long time looking (here and overseas) for good cod liver oil I thought I should post.
My version tastes like lemon and it has natural vit D which is great for the winter months . Didn't mean to make this sound like an advertisement but I really like it!

I discovered a disturbing fact about the Healthspan Cod Liver oil, which I liked and have been taking for months, because it seemed the healthiest option after doing the research into its mercury contents. I also fell for their advertising of coming out on top in tests. I figured their refining process excluded all pollution, but was wrong.
Healthspan's St Clements contains a large amount of Dioxin and PCBs with Dioxin like properties, sitting just below the limit the EU has set for fish oil supplements. It contains 1.47 +/- 0.15 ng/kg of total PCB + Dioxin while the limit is 1.5. Now, the even Seas Ocean Gold Cod Liver Oil was also tested and came out even higher at 3.08 and salmon oil at a shocking 5.65 (Holland & Barrett
Naturally Inspired Salmon Oil 1000 mg).
These are high quantities, higher than the upper safety limits and can be harmful to growing foetesus especially.
I am really annoyed, healthy nutrition is never easy! Now going to look for yet another brand!
The test document can be found at: http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/eudioxin.pdf

Those fish really should have their dangerous amalgam fillings removed. It's causing no end of problems.

Up and down this road

I'll settle for sweet irony...

"Madison Declaration on Mercury Pollution published today ....."
Unbiased source there then
I'm sure they will look in eager anticipation to their grant funding when they declare the effect of mercury is negligable in everyday life. Nope that ain't gunna happen.

Why take Cod liver oil when cod stocks are on the verge of collapse, is there a good alternative?
What is natural "vit D", I thought natural vitamin D was made by your body by sunlight. Would the D from supplements not be synthetic?

My view is that the cod is caught anyway for the fish fillets, and the livers are byproducts that are otherwise unused, and healthspan claims they use a sustainable population, although I am prepared to doubt that.
The vit D is natural because fish accumulate vit D in their tissues, especially in their livers...so the vit D in the oil is not added, it is already there. I guess fish make it too .
For Dave. I was not talking about mercury in fish, I was talking about dioxins, quite a different species, but it does not really matter if you are the devil's advocate anyway |

I was sufficiently interested in the cod liver oil topic to actually read up about it. It seems like all-round good stuff. It seems to have some benefits to the brain.
I will soon be Omega Man ! (Or is that Soylent Green ?)

I hadn't thought of the Vit D as coming from the fish liver so what you say makes perfect sense!

I used to be a CLO user. Isn't linseed oil the new CLO? Well i'm giving it a try at the moment. You can buy linseed oil or in seed form and they EVEN sell it at carrefour in CH. Just a thought, but it depends on why you wnat to take CLO I guess.
