Basel Cost of Living

Hi,

I am currently working in Malaysia and will be relocating to Basel for a period of 2 years starting mid-2007. I will be seconded to an international organisation and will enjoy tax-free salary. I will also be exempted from the Swiss medical insurance requirement. Given all these, my question is whether a monthly allowance of CHF3500 (excluding rent) will be adequate to maintain a decent lifestyle in Basel. The CHF3500 is purely for food, local transportation and daily cost of living. I will get about CHF1800 for rent in addition to the CHF3500 monthly allowance. FYI, I don't really eat out often and plan to travel to London once or twice a month for leisure. Appreciate any feedback you have. Thanks.

A spending income (aka beer fund) of CHF3500 is good.

Bank of International Settlements perhaps?

3500 excluding rent & without tax & insurance sounds very good indeed.
I know people here living on a 1800 Chf tax free monthly allowance in addition to the monthly rent & they can manage a comfortable living. However, they do get there salary in their native country.

Re: Basel Cost of Living

Dear All,

I am Shiju from India, by this Dec I am coming to Basel as deputation from an Indian company for 2 years.

My case is I will be getting 8000 CHF per month but I need to take care all (except the insurance). Will it be possible for me to live in Basel with this salary with my wife and a kid of 6 months old. Also I want to save 3000 CHF per month, so I will have 4500 for spending - will that be manageable ?

All ur replys are highly appreciable.

Regards,
Shiju

Hi Shiju,

Is it the same case as the OP where yours is non-taxable in an organisation like BIS? If so, its very doable. If its taxable, then deduct about 25-30% which may not be enough for your expectations but a lot closer to your target of saving 3K.

Re: Basel Cost of Living

Hi All,

I might take an offer from a company to work in Basel in Aug 2008. Can someone help me understand if yearly Salary of between Swiss Franc 120,000 to 150,000 is enough to have nice life in Basel with my wife? This includes everything and I'll taxed on this income.

Thank you for helping.

M
