| | | Trash Disposal - Basel
Help! Does anyone know where I can dispose of general waste in / close to Basel. We sorted out the keller room and have recycled allot off the over flow but of course there still lots of general stuff like Christmas decorations / old furnishings etc. I know that they collect this rubbish semi annually but I would prefer to find a waste disposal / tip where I can go along and get rid of it before we have relatives to stay.
Many thanks in advance,
Andie

Hi Andie
I hope you understand German - otherwise PM me and I'll translate the important bits for you. http://www.stadtreinigung-bs.ch/data...erbuch2004.pdf explains all your different options to dispose of - well everything basically!
Page 87 has the directions to the tip, and says what you can throw away free of charge and what has to be paid for. I have a feeling you might still have some work ahead of you sorting recyling from non-recyling stuff to save your wallet
Have fun
Tina

If you look up this old Thread on the subject, you get the addresses you need and a laugh too!
Your Thread will probably, sooner or later, land in the Trash/Duplicate Threads by the way!

| | | Where to throw my garbage
Hi all,
I recently moved to a new place, and I bought all the furniture at once. And now after I assembled everything, I am left with a huge amount of nylon sheets. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the nylon sheets?
Regards,

A quick search will throw up dozens of threads asking similar questions. There may be a few which have been placed from the Basel area.

Welcome to the forum, Halaseh. I've merged your thread. Nylon Wrappings are not collected separately so you'll have to dispose of them with the normal waste bags. You could also bring them to a waste facility of the area (they too have been linked in some older threads) but since nylon wrappings are fairly light I think it's not worth the effort.

Tina | | | | | Great link...do you happen to know if the information is offered in English? I tried the Google translate but it said the calendar page was too large for translation. Thank you.

Can't see it in English.
The PDF has lots of pretty pictures in though so I suggest you work out as much as you can by guesswork and if you need individual words try a dictionary, Google or this to translate them. If you're still stuck, come to the language corner here and ask again - some of the words are probably only used in Swiss German (or only in Basel ) but someone on here will surely be around to help.

| | | Recycling / garbage separation in Basel
Hi,
I am new to CH; and somewhat puzzled with garbage separation.
This is what confuses me:
- milk and juice paper (TetraPak) package. Are they to be thrown with paper, with carton (Karton) waste, or those have to go to general waste?
If they are to be thrown with other carton waste, should I remove plastic cap from it, or it's not necessary? Also, rinsing it before folding it is necessary?
Further, what to do with organic waste in Kleinbasel? There seems to be no organic waste bins or anything similar in the area? Any tips?
Thanks!

"Spoiled" cardboard -- i.e. has had food residue on it, even if washed -- goes in the general garbage. This includes pizza boxes and all TetraPak-style cartons.
There is no compost/organic waste collection. You can compost your own organic waste, but assuming you're on the nth floor of an apartment block, that's neither practical nor has it much point; a pot plant can take only so much mulched vege peelings. There are composting points at various locations on the outskirts of Basel, wherever you find rented allotments, but they're usually operated by the allotment tenants.
Just chuck the organic waste in the bin, along with those milk and juice cartons.

This Thread gives you lots of Info for folk new to Basel - rubbish details somewhere in it too. TetraPak milk and juice packaging go into normal rubbish. You learn to squash them VERY small as it saves room in the bag.

PET - collect and take to supermarket
white plastic milk bottles - collect and take to supermarket
Paper - collect and put out once per month
Cardboard - separate pile but same day as paper collection - note envelopes with sticky tabs should go in cardboard and paper pile
Glass - sort by colour and deposit at glass banks
Batteries - take to electrical stores and/or supermarket
You'll get used to it.

Wow, this is helpful already!
how about wine/beer and other glass bottles? There seems to be no deposit on bottles or PET bottles?
Is it the same in Germany or France? (I happen to shop there often). Should I collect glass/PET bottles bought in Germany, to return them to German stores and get deposit back? (if there's any)?
Thanks!

Maybe it's naughty but....
In France there are recycling bins at the supermarkets and in addition to the glass bins we have in basel these take all plastic bottles (not just PET), card and papaer. They don't take tins
Instead of hoarding stuff for a month I (I mean somebody I once knew) take them to France with me when I go shopping

Yup, my friend too. I've He's convinced that the French are actively grateful for all those extra recyclable materials, provided at no charge by a horde of hoarders from just over the border. | Quote: | | | | | Wow, this is helpful already!

Thanks! | | | | | Creck, on both accounts. There is no deposit on bottles or PET bottles in Switzerland. If there were, the drinks would look expensive, and that wouldn't be very Swiss, now would it?
You do pay a deposit in Germany, so if you want it refunded, you need to take your bottles back to the supermarket. If you could be bothered storing them in the corner of your 2 sq m kichen for a few weeks until a refundable mountain develops.

By "carton" do you mean drink cartons? Or do you mean cardboard (which is the English word for carton / karton)?
