Lob does have a good point.
But, (there is usually a but...) most communities have their head where the sun shines and you can usually talk to them. There is a number of loopholes that one can utilize a business zone for living space.
You can (according to my current knowledge) live in a business/industry zoned building:
1. If you are the owner of the building in which your business or industry is located.
2. If you are the "Housemeister" or caretaker of the grounds for the business or industry on the location.
3. If the building is zoned as "Wohn und Gewerbe".
Just recently I signed a new contract with the building owner of a closed business that has transformed the building into a useable business location. The building is still zoned as industry. I will utilize the rented space for photo-studio, printer, office and living area (separate room for bed and clothing).
The Gemeinde (community) made a mad attempt to prevent me from moving into the building.... Claiming I have to subit a building permit (for a building in which I do not own!) and pay CHF 500.- into their coffee fund.
Go figure, with a kind letter from the owner of the building... "informing" the community of our intentions... the community responded with a letter basically saying, "... we will close an eye to this and allow for the business and living situation in an industry zoned building.".
So, to wrap up this soap-opera, talk to your community and find out who makes the decision and have a beer or coffee with them.
Good luck, let me know if there is anything else I can do to help you out! Drop me an e-mail direct.
Bests from the East Side,
