| | | Fasnacht (Mardi Gras) (Carnaval) - Which one is best
Hellooooo
Another great excuse to party is coming up. I looked it up for this year and it's happening between February 20th and 28th and I want to go to the funnest one in Switzerland. If they're not really that great, maybe the one in Koln.
What do you guys think? Which ones have you been to? Are there any beads involved? ( I hope not)
Sorry if this question has come up before, search turned up nothing.
(I just learned what "fasnacht" is)
Thanks!

Thanks! | | | | | the one in Luzern is the best by most accounts, from the 15th to the 22nd. I went last year and it was truly excellent.

It is very difficult to say which one is best, as it really is down to ones taste.

I'm heading to the opening night in Baden, AG tomorrow night... I actually have a reason to celebrate. Also planning on going Saturday night. They've already begun setting up the stages and decorated a lot of the "old town."
By the way, it is primarily the Catholic towns that will be celebrating this weekend (so Luzern as well). The following weekend the Protestants celebrate in places such as Zurich and Basel. You can take in both if you have the time and the will!

| | | Where is the best place to celebrate Carnival?? Hi, I want to celebrate Carnival this year, but live in a prodominally protasant part of Switzerland, which tends not to celebrate. I have found website such as: http://www.swissworld.org/eng/swissworld.html?siteSect=606&sid=4077399&rubricId= 14060 and http://www.lfk.ch/ But I hear that the Valis region is fun as well. Just looking for thoughts on the "best" place to go revel Cheers, Brie |

I think Chur has it this weekend, at least the man says so.
I went last year. I'll just leave it at that. |

Luzern started 5:00 am this morning. I caught the last night last year, and I want to catch a lot more of it this year. I hope to take a couple of mornings off during this one to party the night away and not worry about having to be up when most people seem to be going to bed...
I might be a bit biased living here, and I haven't even gone to any of the other carnivals, so I guess I'm not the one to judge which is city best, but I'd recommend it to anyone.

If you see someone in Luzern painted green, blowing a trumpet and being all Swiss - give him a slap from me. He's taken this week and next week off for this!!

I'm going to be checking out Luzern on Monday if nothing else comes up. Looks like a lot of fun!
Also, there is a Fasnacht in Bern (closer to Neuchatel), but I don't know how it is, and the bloody website is in Bernese Swiss German -- http://www.fasnacht.be/ |

Hey
Well, we went to Lucerne (LOZARN) on Tuesday night, had a blast, can't beat drinking on the street. It was really a lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone. You are basically allowed to litter during the party!!! And, we saw lots of dudes peeing into the river. And we even met some Swiss people!!! Which is like, woah. That has not happened in 3 months here.
Too bad we missed the train going home. We spent 3 hours shivering in the station.
Very good time.

Hi,
normally when people talk about Fasnacht in Switzerland they are talking about the 2 most famous events: Basel Fasnacht ( http://www.fasnacht.ch/) and Lucern Fasnacht. However, if you heading down to join the crowds in Basel for Morgestraich which starts at 4am on Monday morning then why not head to Liestel on Sunday. I am amazed they have not yet burned down Liestal.http://www.fasnacht-liestal.ch/seiten/
Have fun
Martin

Forgot all about Mardi Gras coming up. I even took French in school and that was a holiday my teacher had us make food for. Never been to any celebration for it. I'm near Zurich, what would be the best one to go to?

Kara - come to Basel, see them try to burn down the town nearby in Liestal, and then wait a little bit for the 4am Morgestraich, parade of lanterns in the dark....

It can, because Canon can.
Anyway, why do they freak? Does it break their concentration from their carefully choreographed performance? Err...
