It's the season to close the windows and hide in our over dry apartments to keep away the miseries of the freezing cold outside. Unfortunately this can cause a number of problems and can contribute to some health problems (I have just spent a week in the hospital due to very heavy and persistant nosebleeds which were I believe precipitated by an over dry athmosphere),
So does anyone have any recommendations/advice over domestic humidifiers.
A humidifier will help. I bought a couple of Air-O-Swiss from Fust before Xmas and I'm very happy with them. They are cold (ie not steam) evaporation type with a big water container and built in hydrostat so you can set the desired humidity level. There is a build-in three speed fan to disperse the humidity which makes it ideal for larger rooms/rooms with high ceilings. The only problem is that on higher settings the fan is a bit noisy ecxept on the lower setting. For a bedroom you would probably be better off with a steam variety but these can cause mould if you over humidify. All humidifiers should be cleaned and disinfected regularly. The relevant parts of the Air-O-Swiss can be put in the dishwasher and it comes with a stick of silver which is supposed to stop bacteria forming the water and it does seem to work. (Yes Lynn88 I can hear your "I told you so!). I've tried several types over the years and this is best I've had: http://www.fust.ch/fust//AIR-O-SWISS...E-2251/640230/
for many years now and am happy with it, you can put the filter thingy in a dishwasher too and only have to add a few mililiters of a liquid to stop the water from getting 'foul' should you not use it some time.
I have been here since Jan and was in a serviced apt until Oct, no problems at all.
Now in new apt in Zurich - Affoltern and my skin is really dry and itchy, throat feels like im in a dust storm, i have windows open 24x7 but air is soooooo dry.
I have just bought an humidifier and it helps a little. I spray water into the air constanlty too.
Is this normal in Switzerland, i have never experienced anything like it...
Also i DONT have the heating on....
any extra advice ??
Cheers
Rob
Ps. forgot to add, constant ninor electric shocks on finger tips everywhere in apt !!!!
Solis travel is ok for on your work desk etc but for home far better to have a larger unit. I have a solis ultrasonic
Ultrasonic Vernebler Typ 715 unit and its good for a bedroom etc - quite expensive at close to 200chf but works very well
