I live in Lausanne and am looking for ideas for fun things to do to mark a 5oth birthday eg.helicopter rides -. would appreciate all ideas..Justine
Euthanasia is possible here and you probably haven't already done that. Not sure how much it costs!
OK, before you send me loads of groans, this is just my sense of humour. On my 50th, I just stayed in and cried and I've since become a recluse.
I have taken a helicopter from Leysin and it landed on the glacier above Les Diablerets, where we had a glass of champagne. This was a corporate thing that was done in 96 and I have no idea how much it cost. Sure it's still possible though.
Re: 50th birthday - any ideas on fun things to do?
Thanks for all the ideas! but, its a tough one as he has already been there and done all so far! the 50th is for a male...and I want to do something really original..keep on posting

For my dad's 50th, he and I did a dusk/evening treasure hunt through downtown Sydney. The treasure hunt ended up leading him to a very nice restaurant where all his friends and the rest of the family were waiting to yell 'SURPRISE!'.
It wasn't the swankiest thing- but loads of fun and he loved it.

I think there are some men between 45-50 on this Forum, they should give you some ideas about what they would dream of getting as a present apart from wanting a 25 year old blonde ...

Re: 50th birthday - any ideas on fun things to do?
There are a lot of Swiss (let alone foreigners living in Switzerland...) who have never seen Hornussen, watched the Escalade, seen the truly bizarre Eieraufleset in Effingen, marvelled at the folly of blindfolded young men trying to cut down - mind you, with a blunt sword! - a dead goose hanging from a wire over a stage in Sursee (called the 'Gansabhauet'), or seen the beautiful cardboard mitres (lit from the inside with candles, paraded at night) in Küsnacht... In other words, there is a lot of local culture out there, unique celebrations found nowhere else (*especially* in the next village over: a lot of the current manifestations are about what is special about a particular locality). It's a unique experience to go to some of these, and that can be combined with more conventional celebration activities.
If you want more information, including in your area, let me know. Many of the things listed above only happen once a year, so it would be good to know what your time frame is.

It seems you're looking for sensation, which is nice but ephemeral.
Why not do something tried-and-tested: a big party with as many friends as possible? It doesn't have to be an Elton John affair; rent a local community centre and use the money on good wine and a BBQ Being with friends and family is surely the loveliest way to spend the day / night?
An elegant, personal offering - jewellery, a first-edition of a favourite book, planting a tree etc - would suffice if you wanted a gift.

This is pretty amazing, the video does not do it justice apart from maybe at the very end where you get a good idea of the speed! Not too far from Lausanne
Then after a couple of goes on the fantasticable there is the wonderfully quirky Vieux chalet restaurant with the unique owner Babeth a few hundred meteres away:
