Re: Naked Saunas

This bathing suits in saunas = unhygienic issue can be tossed around until the cows come home for all I care.

If it was that big a deal where bacteria is concerned then it's up to the owners/management/staff to make it known and forbid the wearing of them via the rules, notices or, failing that, a little word in the ear of potential offenders. Maybe they do here, I've no idea.

Meanwhile, I'm off to see about building my own sauna () and continue reading the business book I've been asked to read and review on Amazon for a colleague.

Y'all have a great day!

I prefer to swim in a pool knowing that someone has his swimming suit which might had his sweat in and is now diluted in a huge amount of water mixed with chemical products than sitting on a spot where someone left his naked butt sweat.

Re: Naked Saunas

I don't think rationality will get anybody anywhere here. Hygiene is not only about rational study of germs. What counts is the feeling one has and that is stronger than any discussion.
It is therefore legitimate to ask about textile saunas but it is also perfectly legitimate to answer with a -attitude.

That reminds me of a discussion toilet paper vs. washing with left hand.

Just cannot fathom why so many do NOT shower properly before swimming in a pool. On holiday it makes me absolutely sick to see people covering themselves in suntan lotions, sweat it out for a couple of hours and then dive straight in the pool, and start all over again despite all the signs showing clearly that showering is compulsory, and plenty of showers around.
OK, bracing myself for all the groans, but never mind, it does seem to be very specifically British I've often discussed this with pool attendants on hols, who explained they couldn't have a quiet word with said culprits, as they have often been threatened and shouted at.
In Suisse Romande, most spas have two saunas, one naked, and one with swimsuit, where you are asked to sit on a folded towel. We rented a ski apartment a few years back in Villars, and my daughters I were mumbled at by a German couple 3 times for wearing our swimming costume and sit on folded towels. On the third occasion I gave them a piece of my mind in German, and they couldn't believe a Brit could understand German, let alone speak it. They shut up after that

Re: Naked Saunas

Donkey's years ago in Munich I took my girl friend's son, aged 10, to a swimming pool owned by the city. Unfortunately it was all male and an FKK day. He was horrified, so was I, so I told him to keep his trunks on. However after 5 minutes the pool attendant called him over and told him there had been complaints, and he should be naked! We spoilt the pervert's fun and left immediately.

Do you have to insult FKK people? Can't you just accept the fact that nudity is where your acceptance of other culture stops, and that's fine so but that doesn't allow you lower yourself to such insults.
You didn't want to do FKK, fine, so be it. Teach your children the way you want it. But not such disrespect towards others. Really. I am shocked.

Re: Naked Saunas

Hmm.. One thing which comes mind about these naked saunas is that earlier when people used to go sauna with families and naked there was not that much eating disorders and people were more confident about their bodies + understood the reality what happens when people get older. Nowadays everyone has some problems with their looks and trying to be forever young.

Second thing about the swimming suit + sauna is that if you go swimming in the pool and afterwards go to the sauna, even if you take shower between, it will not get all the pool water out of the swimming suit. When pool water starts to steam up in sauna, it causes poisonous gas to appear in sauna. That is why towels are allowed in some saunas and swimsuits never. And same thing goes if you have long hair, you should really wash it before entering sauna.

Re: Naked Saunas

This has been a most entertaining thread and one that has been most revealing about hang-ups and attitudes about the human body.In the past, as part of my work I have seen numerous bodies, in various states of undress and health. And once you've experienced attending an autopsy or two you tend to loose your squeamishness about the human body....

It's all situational, really. I've been stark bollock naked in a sauna and it's been as erotic as a wet Wednesday in Scunthorpe, whilst a completely clothed encounter with a nurse at a conference COMPLETELY carbonated my hormones...For a while I was at the same fitness club as my boss, it's a bit bizarre to be talking about work when you both are changing clothes but hardly much more.

This whole thread reminds me of the joke about the psychiatrist giving a Rorshach test to a patient, to every image the patient says it reminds him of sex. After a dozen cards the exasperated psychiatrist blurts out "you are REALLY obsessed by sex, aren't you?" to which the patient replies in hurt tones "Me? But you're the one showing all the dirty pictures"

It never ceases to amaze me how various societies regard the human body..

I think you are missing the point there - obviously do we have more bacteria on our skin than in our clothes. But the point is that most people in Zurichs saunas do not jump into a hole in the ice - they typically have to use a pool. If I am naked, I sweat in the sauna, take a quick shower and then dip into the pool. If you wear swim shorts, they get soaked in your sweat and I bet with you that you won't wash it out completely with some seconds under the shower. So all your sweat ends up in the pool... I do not really care if the bacteria in your sweat is dead or not, I'd rather like you to wash your sweat off before we share a pool - and that works best without swim wear.
who cares about sweat in the pool. if you're swimming, you're sweating into the pool anyway.

Re: Naked Saunas

the thing i find strange about saunas is that normal society rules are suspended. i'm ok with swimwear in saunas etc. but i find it weird that being naked in a sauna is ok, but being naked in public isn't.

Oh, just go work in Finland where, instead of on the golf course, stuff gets decided in the sauna....yeah, it makes for some interesting times when you're the only female in a group of guys. Naked sweaty colleagues are the stuff of nightmares. I never watched Seinfeld, but there was one episode I was told to watch...the 'good naked, bad naked' one which made me giggle for days.

Maybe you should come here to work first. Saunas are used at the evenings and no business is done on those events usually. Also men and women are going saunas separately and no one is not forced to join these events. Those events are out of normal office times and usually just meant to give some time to relax and be social with your collegues in stressless environment and afterwards going to the bar to have some fun. We have normal meetings where decisions are made. Please discontinue to give false information as your knowledge base seems to be BBC or some rumour about sauna culture at Nokia:

Re: Naked Saunas

This thread has amused me too, particularly many people's rather prudish attitudes to nakedness. I was a bit apprehensive the first time, but that was a long time ago.
Today, as far as I am concerned, naked is the way we come into the world and that's it. There is frankly nothing erotic about a sauna in my opinion.
As far as hygiene is concerned, that's why you're supposed to take a towel in with you - to sit on.

Saunas primarily work the sweat zones - i.e. armpits and crotch. If you don't want to be naked, saunas are a waste of your time. Bathing suits in Saunas are also very unhygienic.
you revived a 10 month old thread to tell us that?

I just built my own sauna on my balcony. It's pretty easy actually. They come in pre-fab kits:

http://www.holzsauna.ch/Saunas/Sauna...teinstieg.html

The 220V heaters are kind of weak tho, but if you check, most washing machines/dishwashers are connected to a 3-phase connection, so you can just use that. I have a 8kW oven that cooks up to 100 C in under an hour

We had a sauna in our office building when I worked in Estonia, but it was never used during office-hours (that I was aware of), and not for any company sponsored events. I think it was meant for using it after work with your friends, ie: you could reserve it for your private use.

Also, mixed saunas aren't too common in Estonia (and I guess Finland) either. Most people have their own private saunas, or have friends who do. So not many people go to public saunas. And in private saunas, of course you can do what you want, but usually the guys go together and the women separately. Mixed-sex public saunas seem more popular in Germany/Switzerland where owning your own sauna isn't too common. I've been taking saunas since I was 5 years old, and the only place I've ever seen or taken a mixed-sex sauna was in Germany and Switzerland.

But the towel is never big enough for the guy that sits on it, resulting in drops of sweat dripping everywhere!
