I've copied my post below from "Housing in General" in case anyone's seen it before. This seems to be a more appropriate home for it.
Hi all
We're looking for a house to rent which is commutable to Opfikon and have seen ads (homegate etc) for a few in and around Frauenfeld. A Swiss friend in Winterthur said however they wouldn't recommend Frauenfeld to someone new to the area (we're coming from Geneva and don't speak German - yet) as it has something of a "closed" village mentality. I've heard it from a Swiss colleague too and I'm beginning to think the other side of Winterthur is like the dark side of the moon! Personally, I would rather live in a village or small town than in a city or large town but that's not to say we're looking for the kind of place where everyone stops and stares at you if you walk into the local shop/bar/restaurant.
Does anyone share this opinion of Frauenfeld?
I've also read on a post here (can't remember which) that one of the down-sides of Thurgau is its schools. Any thoughts on this aspect? We have a 6 and a 2 year old but wouldn't want to have to move again in a few years time to find a better school.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks
All I can say is that they know how to party and the youth didn't strike me as exotic in any way. The village looks nice and there seems to be enough infrastructure. Given the choice between Frauenfeld and something more remote I'd move to Frauenfeld.
We live near to Frauenfeld. There may be a small town mentality but there is loads to do, near enough to Zurich and Konstanz (Germany for restaurants, shops) and the Bodensee. Also closish to Austria. There are lots to do for the kids, Frauenfeld has one of the best and advance scout groups in Switzerland, the Swimming pool is good, prices of houses go further than Winterthur and Zurich and it appears that more expats are moving from the smoke. Other attractions such as St Gallen and Appenzell are not far away.
Low taxes in Thurgau. Can`t comment on the schools as I don`t know how they stack up with other parts of Switzerland.

Thanks both of you. I feel a lot better now and I'm probably just being paranoid about the schools but such an important move (from France bordering Geneva) is so nerve-wracking!
