| | | Games/Software in English
Hi,
Does anyone know of any place in Geneva (or Switzerland) that sells PC Games in English? I know there used to be Infologo that used to have quite a good service for new games, but they closed their doors a year ago. Thanks!
Kind Regards,
Denis

PC Joy used to bring in English games but now it has been bought out I'm not sure if they still do or not. I generally buy everything from Softridge who go out of their way to get hold of what you want, be it American imports, UK imports etc.
They are based in Zurich / Luzern but they will ship by post. Most of the guys in the Stadelhofen store speak English and are very helpful. www.softridge.ch |

The only problem with ordering online from places like play.com, videogamesplus.ca etc is that the parcels are often stopped by customs when they enter Switzerland and you end up paying not just the duty but also the extortionate admin charges of the carrier - around 25 francs for DHL etc and at least 10 francs from the post office.

This definitely doesn't happen unless you are ordering a large quantity of games or dvds. I've ordered many times whilst in Switzerland from play.com (the largest order was about 120CHF) and i've never had any problems. Customs certainly won't charge you for one or two pc games.

I agree about play.com - they send single CD/DVDs and these get through OK.

So much so that I stopped ordering from outside of Switzerland when I can get the same item inside switzerland (in the case of Xbox360 games, often faster with no risk of duty).

I stopped having Play send to my adress in Switzerland a few years ago when customs spotted two seperate DVD's being delivered the same day. They taped them together and charged me the tax plus admin. This made me unhappy.

bittorrent?
Guess this won't be an issue once more publishers go to direct online distribution.

Direct online distribution is not perfect if you are outside of your native country.
As an example, direct downloads of video and audio in the states is often locked down so that it is only accessible to people with an IP address in the US and with a Credit card registered in the US etc. Yes there are ways around it but companies are getting better at locking it down.
So, even with direct downloads we may still be in the same situation and looking to import games, dvds etc in our native language.

I was considering play.com but knowing my luck i'll get stung for customs charges also as i usually do
Cheers Nicky

I bought tischtennis for the xbox360 yesteday, it was in german, but my system is in English, the game plays in English... I don't know what CoD would do though.
I come from PC game past and I can't do FPS games without a mouse and Keyboard. There is a gadget that plugs into the Xbox that supports Mouse and Keyboard (ps2 though).

The majority of 360 games are multi language and will switch to the language of the console system. As an example, Rainbow Six Vegas says on the box that the game and manual is entirely in German but it plays fine in English on a 360 with English set as the system language.
I have found this to the be the case with all but one game so far - Burnout, it plays in French on an english system as French is the next language selecton on the system screen - it can be switched to German though so it is playable.
Softridge in either the HB or Stadelhofen station underground is one of the best places in Zurich to buy console games, the 360 games are often in early and they will check (normally they know) if they will play in English or not. If there is a language problem they will import a UK or US version for you.
I can not recall if my CoD3 is boxed in German or if is a region free US import but it was bought (like 90% of my games now) from softridge.
BTW Nicky are you the same person that I met in the HB to sell some Xbox 360 games to a few months ago?

cheers Zenstar i'll check out Softridge, didn't want to risk getting Call of Duty 3 if it doesn't play in English but will ask at Softridge

No more for sale atm, I traded a couple of games in recently.
If you go to Softridge at Stadelhofen it is slightly larger and all of the guys there speak English, as I said if they are not sure of a game language they will not hesitate to switch the language of their demo box and test it out for you.
If you are thinking about a PS3, mention it to them as they will soon have one in for demo and you can book private sessions on it where you can play along with a Sony rep.

If you go onto the homepage of play.com and change the currency from sterling to euros it should then let you order from here. I read on their site that they don't deliver some things to Europe but, games,DVD's and CD's have all been fine. HTH

I did change the currency to euro's I initially ordered a R/C helicopter and it said only delivery to UK so then thought maybe they only send Vid Games, CDs and DVDs outside UK so tried ordering a 360 game and still said only delivery to UK?
No worries, other half will just have to do without toys for xmas this year |

We have ordered a Gamecube game that is on its way. Did you take off the item not orderable before trying again? We have had no problems ordering games, cd's etc.
Let me know if that doesn't work and I will have another think.

Thanks for the advice
