I have a moving/shipping question.
We are located in the US, Vermont.
We are looking for a company to ship 2-3 pallets to Basel CH.
Does anyone know of a reputable company? Any advice would be appreciated.

we have used packimpex before. some damages happened, but insurance reimboursed them. Shipping times are long unless you have the $$$. Most places wait until there is a container to be filled.

I am going with NationWide movers. There's EOM shipping, Cross Country Vanlines, etc...There are a lot of them if you search online. I've gotten so many calls and spam from moving companies!

The company I'm going with is a broker, and seems to hire a separate carrier (shipping company), which kind of ticked me off before because I received a lower estimate from that same shipping company. However, they have really good customer service and I faith that if anything happens, I can contact them and won't have trouble getting help. A lot of others I called, I couldn't understand them, the connection was bad, or they just weren't very nice.

Please share your experiences with shipping large quantity of personal items via cargo shippers from Chicago (or USA) to Zurich.

I just graduated and will be moving there. Like most graduate students, I have way too many books that I can carry on the plane. Plus, I want to ship some electronic items like desktop computer, artwork, tools, and some other things that I use quite often. What is the best (economical but safe) way to transport approx 200 cubic feet of personal items cargo to zurich?


Any pointers will be appreciated.

I haven't actually shipped any of my stuff from Chi-town yet despite being here 5 months (still haven't decided if I want to buy new furniture or not!), but it was my experience:
a) 200 cubic feet was generally the minimum for most shippers.
b) Cost estimates were from 2000-3000 USD and time was about 3 months.
c) From everything I've read on this board and others, some of your stuff is gonna take some damage. All I can suggest is that you get whatever insurance your shipper provides!

Doing a google search for "international movers" turns up quite a few hits, but some of them seemed pretty shady to me. If you go with one of the larger well-established companies such as Allied, you might be better off.

When I moved here from Texas, I dealt directly with Lufthansa Cargo, and they were significantly cheaper than any of the shippers or forwarders. I schlepped my boxes directly to DFW airport and picked them up myself at ZRH airport a few days later ... Over 1,000 lbs for around $2,400.



Note: YMMV. Other air cargo firms like AA do not deal directly with consumers, supposedly some post 9-11 paranoia B.S. LH Cargo was easy and friendly.
