| Thanks for the help. The IKEA ones I think are just normal shelves. You put hot food or spill something and they will be toast. The metal one I posted is proper eating one. Resistant to all food related damage. | |

| Since you mention spillage, keep in mind that the shelf may resist but the wall is likely to be marred. Just a thought. | |

Well, going with the facts presented by both of you, why not simply get a sturdy shelf from Obi and then surface it to your liking?
Start with the plain shelf, pick up some tile-setting materials and maybe some tile or hunt around for some used chipped up crockery or old china that you can smash and use in place of the tile. Then get two glass shelves corresponding to the size of your eating shelf, one to lay on top to protect it from spills, the other to go against the wall to protect the wall from spills and splatters and seal the corner formed with some clear epoxy type stuff.
Going with something like this, you can of course switch up the materials, the main pieces are a sturdy shelf system that can hold the weight of whatever you want to put on top (maybe including your elbows

) but you can use whatever you want to pretty up the plain board. Paint, a fabric you like, beads, make a picture with sand or macaroni, or maybe use gift wrap... then cover it with the glass top and you're good to go.
