Where can I find wild Pussy Willow branches [Kätzchen-Weide]?

also known as Wikipedia reference-linkpussy_willow or Widakätzli (spelling-citation required) in swiss-german. I've been invited to a chinese new year gathering, and this particular willow features prominently during this festival in the south. I am hoping to procure some on my own to give to the host.

Can anyone tell me where one might be able to find wild Kätzchen, particularly, in the zurich-baden-brugg areas? here's a close-up

more images here

many thanks in advance!

Re: Where can I find wild Kätzchen-Weide?

If I'm right, the Chinese New Year falls on February the 14th, Year of the Tiger (mine) and by then spring will be well on the way. Well in the shops at least.
I have already seen bundles of Forsythia (I always want to write Forthysia) being sold.
So close to that time you should no problems getting it, even in the Migros or Co-op.
Certainly any of the florists or gardening places will have it by then.
Or if you see someone with a tree, I'm sure you could ask for some. It grows readily, so will in no way damage the tree.

No, not at all, sorry, just one of the first signs of spring. Willow is Willow, but also a spring time sign, it's everywhere and will be around very soon.
Once you get some, you can keep it for quite some time, in a cool, dark place (in a jar of water), till a few days before you want to gift it, then bring it out (approx a week before), to present it to your people, by which time it will have started to bud nicely.

Re: Where can I find wild Kätzchen-Weide?

I am not familiar enough with all the areas yet to know how near or far it is from where you are

BUT

I know there is some pussy-willow growing along the path leading to the entry building at Papiliorama - or, there was some there last spring anyhow.

Maybe give them a call and ask after it? Even if they won't let you snip off a few branches, they likely will be able to tell you where you can find some.

thanks for the info! its a bit out of the way to just pick the willow, but the Papiliorama definitely looks interesting, worth a visit if I'm in Bern. I've written to the Papiliorama, i'll see if they'd help me out

I saw them on Saturday in Coop. Can't say if it came from the wild or a farm.

It should be growing quite commonly along lakesides, river banks and marshy areas.

Make sure that you get the landowners permission to cut some. You certainly won't do the trees any harm. They are almost impossible to kill.

Hi Hsiang
I was just in my local Coop yesterday (Coop Aarepark Wuerenlingen) and saw that they have ample supply of the willow branches. Go check it out.

here's the reply from Papilirama :P

Kätzchen-Weide is correctly called Sal-Weide (Salix caprea) in german or Goat Willow in english. It is a very common plant. You can buy it in any garden centre which sells outdoor plants, it shouln'd be very expensive. In the coming weeks with Easter approaching you will find them in the shops as mini-trees. Alternatively you can make cuttings and put them in water, they may make roots and you can plant them.
It is not an endangered plant.
