Where would you sleep (or where have you slept) if you were homeless for a night?

It's a bit worrying I know but once I was in this position in Switzerland for one night....I'd stormed off after a row with the missus & slept in the car....I was pretty thankful she 'phoned me to apologize () & I could get back to my bed the following night...I thought, thank God I had my car. If not I think I would have taken my tent & set it up in a cave near where I live.

Where do you think your favourite place would be to sleep?

BTW I think there are a lot of good places in CH.

If you have done it, well, that would be really interesting to hear about...

I would go to Longstreet bar, pick up some random below my normal standards and then sleep at his house.

I have been very seriously tempted to do some impromptu camping these last two summers. Haven't succumbed yet but it is probably only a matter of time.

Weather like this though, it'd have to be somewhere indoors. I reckon I'd probably come up to the university: it's quiet, safe, familiar and I have a reasonable excuse for being there if questioned. (Done that before, but not here.)

Lobby of the Park Hyatt or other 5 star hotel. Careful you don't fall asleep though - I experienced this in Barcelona - you get moved along pretty quick.

Also slept in the car after a beery session in Bern after a rugby match. The stench and condensation in the morning was rather impressive.

Find an all night bar, Grabli bar in the Niederdorf apparently only closes at 5:30am for a quick clean, then it's open again at 6am.

There was a survey of places in the UK about this once (can't find a link). A shower block on the West coast of Scotland was in the top 10 as it was heated, was open 24 hours and rarely used. Considering that then, I'd splash out a whole CHF2 on a cubicle in the McClean toilets at the nearest train station.

Hang about, have I just considered loitering in a Gents toilet overnight! (might get George Michaels autograph I suppose)

Re: Where would you sleep (or where have you slept) if you were homeless for a night?

Discounting the Credit Card option, not in the city, that's for sure. Head out into the country, where there's few busy bodies to worry about. Loads of places to get your head down comfortably in the country if you've an eye for it.

For those with little cash in their pockets, there are options. Haus Justinus in Zurich - houses in Fribourg and Geneva too - is a place which serves to provide affordable accomodation for students, but they hold back a few rooms for those at the end of their tether / needing a place of calm and warmth / an emergency room for the night or two and no questions asked. It's a religious organisation, but they don't discriminate nor preach. Plus, the rooms have better views than the Dolder Grand Hotel.

Highly recommended

Re: Where would you sleep (or where have you slept) if you were homeless for a night?

EDIT: when I was in London, I established various 'crash' houses where I could stay in the even of mishap e.g. disused buildings, hidden rooms within commercial buildings etc. i did try to convince my ex to stay overnight in one for a laugh, but she wasn't really very keen on the idea of trespassing.

I haven't established any similar places in Zurich, but I guess a more sensible thing might be to stay at a friends house?

Straight up homeless? Probably a church.
Pouting for a night, or drunk? Airport seems like a safe-ish option. Or say sorry and go back in the house.

Re: Where would you sleep (or where have you slept) if you were homeless for a night?

I once spent the night on a bench in Zug station, sustained by a carrier bag full of Curly-Wurlies and Walker's crisps.

I didn't sleep a wink, of course, but it was warmer and drier than the street, and nobody bothered me at all.

Not sure I'd actually recommend it, though.

Easy - Dolder Hotel and I'll make sure the person who made me homeless for that night, pays for it.

I once spent a cold February night at the Pisa station in Italy after the bus services stopped and I could not keep sitting in a bus going to and fro - not recommended!

How about an ATM center - they are generally a bit heated, and you can get in using any valid card!
