Where should I take a visitor during Basel Fasnacht?

I hope I won't upset Basel Fasnacht lovers...

I will have a visitor this coming weekend for a week. The visitor has NO interest in Fasnacht.

Where should we go then?
Any lovely advice would be very appreciated!

Re: Where should I take a visitor during Basel Fasnacht?

Hi,

well Basel from Monday till 4 am Thursday morning will be celebrating Fasnacht so if you want to avoid it then I would suggest travelling outside Basel as really the best choice whilst Fasnacht is on.

Not the best timing if you are not interested in Fasnacht.

Have fun

Martin

Go to Luzern, Schwyz... any of the Catholic cantons. They're celebrating Fasnacht this weekend, so it'll be over by the time you get there.

Re: Where should I take a visitor during Basel Fasnacht?

Going slightly OT..

I remember a few years ago my wife was having to deal with a UK recruitment agency who wanted to send their candidate for interview for a post at the company right in the middle of Fasnacht week. The agent obviously had their eye on their commission. They also wanted to put the candidate up at a hotel at the opposite side of town.

It took a lot of persuading to make them understand that (i) there would be nobody in the office to conduct an interview and (ii) expecting a stranger to get across town when all public transport will be diverted is a bad idea.

Cheers,
Nick

Colmar is nice as well. It is only 35-40 minutes drive away

Re: Where should I take a visitor during Basel Fasnacht?

Would their lack of interest in things fasnacht go as far as the bonfire parade in Liestal?

Even if they aren't interested in the reasons for it most people can't avoid wondering how nobody gets burned alive or commenting on how "it wouldn't happen where I come from because of the safety issues".

I'll go again but I always end up desperately needing a pee and struggling to find a toilet - don't take them if they have prostate or pelvic floor problems.

I know... Fasnacht is so special for the local people in Basel! I have been living in Basel for nearly ten years. I warned the visitor again and again but we could not find another weekend to meet up. As some people recommended me, we will probably go to France and also Luzern ara. Thank you all for your advice!
