I don't know if there is a better store in Basel, but this store has just about everything. http://www.boesner.ch
There is one in Freiburg, and another one near Aarau - about 30 minutes from Basel. But I believe you can also order online.

OK. If you are serious, then head up the motorway to Mulhouse and the Wittenheim trading estate. There's a shop there that sells cheap arty stuff. Canvases are a fraction the cost of ones in CH.
Unfortunately I can't remember the name, but it is almost directly opposite on the other side of the dual carriageway from the Decathlon (Rue des Mines Anna, 68270 Wittenheim, France).
PM me if you want more details.

There is a place in Basel called 'Das Haus mit 1001 Bastelideen' - PRESSER AG. It's at 24 Gerbergasslein.
You can see it from Gerbergass, which is the pedestrian street that the Body Shop and the shoe shops are on that runs from Barfusserplatz towards Marktplatz. You can see the shop looking up one of the streets. At the moment there is a guy selling roasted chestnuts in front of the street. I'm sure google maps will have it!
They are a smallish shop but packed full of stuff. You may find what you are looking for there.

Update: just went to the French place mentioned above - it is all swanky and new - big red building. (Not yellow anymore)
The name of the shop is: Les Couleurs du Temps
Part of a chain: http://www.lescouleursdutemps.fr/
Happy painting.

There is also a shop very close to Ono - don't know it's name though - it is in the house that lays in the corner of Leonhardsgraben and Auf der Lyss. If you take tram 3 you'll get off at Universität, and then follow the tram tracks for 50m or so towards Barfützerplats.
This shop is very targeted towards painting materials.

Sorry to resucitate this thread but I was wondering if you knew the name of a good arts and craft supply store online I am looking for fabric among other sewing materials.
I just visited a couple of stores in Basel and I refuse to pay 26 CHF for a meter of padding, I mean WTF? | |
