Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

I have to pick someone up from Basel airport, and I was wondering the nearest French supermarket of reasonable size, where I can grab some wine , duck pate etc. to make the chore more palatable...

You can go to Geant in Saint Louis. It's on the way to the airport.

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

or pass the airport and go to Carrefour near Mulhouse. Il Napoleon/Usine Puegeot is the area it's in.

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

If you have time I would sugget doing what Lob said (around 20min drive from the border). Another suggestion is to try not to cross the Swiss/French border on the way home because you will most likely get checked, try go to Germany and then cross the German/Swiss border.

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

another reason to avoid the French side is the road works all the way through Basel
Do note that there is a family of cameras in the 80 zone when you've crossed Germany-Basel (autobahn crossing)

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

I will be flying into Basel Airport soon, and since it is so hard to bring foods / liquids on flights, I was hoping to stock up on French delicacies before crossing the border back to Switzerland (better Seafood, Cheese, Pâté, Steak etc.).

However, I don't have a car and can only use public transport.

What would be the best village / town to visit en route from Basel Airport back to Basel Hbf? Or is there a town with a decent supermarket which is an easy return trip from the airport (again by public transport).

(A supermarket is better than lots of small shops - okay the food is not as good, but it is cheaper and quicker when in a rush)

Thanks

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

the route to the airport into Basel doesn't really work like that. The road between the airport and town, though technically in France, doesn't have any junctions to allow you to divert into France proper. With a car you could exit the airport on the French side and drive to St Louis, but with public trasnport it would be extremely difficult to do what you want to do.

Re: Nearest French Supermarket to Basel Airport

If you come out of the French side of the airport, there is a bus which takes you to the station in St-Louis for 1 euro. You come out of the station and turn right, at the end of the road you also turn right and the Geant Casino (supermarket) is just under the bridge on the right.

Hope this helps.....Mike

And from there, it isn't difficult to get a bus into Basel, either. (sorry, can't tell you which one to take though, it has been years and years since I took a bus to Geant)

I would just like to thank Lob for this wonderful info. Btw, where's your "thanks" button, Lob? Ever since I started driving, I've always been on the lookout for those cameras.
