Appropriate Wedding Dress

Hi all:

I have been invited to my first German wedding which take place in 2 weeks. I wanted to get some feedback because I am very confused now. There seems to be a fine line with being part of the family and/or just a family friend.

In the US, especially NY, we tend to "deck out" and overdress at these occasions whether we are family or not. I have heard the opposite is true here and anything goes???

It is so hot out now that I am sure I would be uncomfortable in the formal dress (usual black) I brought over.

Someone suggested pairing a trendy baby-doll shirt with a nice skirt.

Is this way too undressed? Should I go "all-out" and just deal with being uncomfortable?

The reception will take place at a restaurant the parentīs of the bride own.

Thanks to all.

Mini-skirt and tight top. Minimum clothe always works in Germany...

Re: Appropriate Wedding Dress

Uhhhh, thanks, I think? That really narrows it down. I think we will ask the bride and the groom.

Re: Appropriate Wedding Dress

Well I'd say don't go over the top, but don't be afraid to wear something smart. After all, if others choose to dress down - their loss.

I'm just a little confused though - you say you normally wear a black dress - to a wedding? I would have thought that would be a bit of a no-no, at least in the anglo-saxon world? Save the black for a funeral. But who knows, Swiss or Germans might think it is totally normal to wear black to a wedding - not sure on that one.

Went to a Swiss wedding the other week. Normally I would wear a suit to the wedding just out of respect, but nobody did. Mind you it was a baking hot day, and we were all outside. Some people turned up in shorts, but I made the effort to wear long trousers and a long sleeved shirt (rolled up). Some others did as well, but not everybody. I think it would also be highly dependent on the bride and groom as to what they might expect. Do you know any of the other guests? Why not ask for their opinion?

Re: Appropriate Wedding Dress

I would agree with Mark, it is very much dependent on the Bride and Groom, their families and friends. Most German weddings I have been to are smart casual to suits but certainly not OTT as in England or US ie women with the ball gowns and hats to match

If the OP isn't dressed by now, she may have missed the wedding.
