Hann has no particular reputation at present
clubs and societies

Hi there,

Well, I moved to Zurich from Amsterdam two weeks ago. I am trying to get to know people and find out more information about clubs and societies that I might be interested in joining. Can anyone please help? I play the clarinet and would like to join a local band or orchestra. I am also interested in joining a canoeing club or rowing club...any ideas??? Thank you for your help

Hann

Hi Hann

Welcome to Switzerland! There's the American Club of Zurich (I know, I know...). It's easy for a Yank to join but there's an Associate membership for non US. You might check there - http://www.acz.ch/index.php?option=c...=82&Itemid=111. I'm not sure what hoops you need to jump through as an associate member. They have frequent social events. Maybe check it out...?

I know you're in Zürich, but south of there in Zug there's the International Men's Club of Zürich (um... I'm assuming that Hann is Johannes and not Hanna?). The Lingua Franca (!) is English but there are far more other nationalities represented (half the club's board are Dutch). http://www.imcz.com

Hope that helps.

D.

Re: clubs and societies

Hi, there

Cool thread! I think joining a club is a very good way to make new friends. I am in a choir that now has also two English speaking members who are fully integrated and very welcome. All others are Swiss or German, and it is a great bunch of people - who do take the singing rather seriously, though (audition required, most members also take singing lessons). If you are interested, just drop me a PM.

At http://www.zuerich.ch/ , there is a list of orchestras and choirs if you click on "Freizeit und Vergnügen", then, "Kultur", then "Musik", then you are there. I have tried finding this on the English version of the site, but it did not work.

If you are looking for a sports club, go to http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/internet...tamt/home.html On the right side, there is a link to Sportvereine, and there, you find a database of sports clubs, sorted by activity and by the part of town.

Hope you find what you are looking for

Re: clubs and societies

I'll have to check which days they're there, but I often see a canoe club playing some kind of water polo here:

(Selnaubrucke).

They look pretty nuts though. That water must be cold

For the Scandinavians in our community, I thought I should post the link to the Scandinavian Choir in Zurich's website. The choir's name is Nota Bene, the website is at http://www.nobe.ch/

Enjoy
