You will get different responses from different people on this one for sure.

Some of it depends on the area - in what part are you expecting to live / visit?
In general, people tend to say that the French and Italian speaking parts tend to be warmer / friendlier, with that more being the case in the Italian speaking areas.
HOWEVER, I have dealt with many friendly personnel in various stores here in Basel (German-speaking area).

Some of it depends on how YOU present yourself. No one is necessarily "expecting" everyone to speak the language when they first arrive. If you learn how to say "I don't speak XXXX very well" or say "Can you speak English (or other language you know)?" in the local language, it goes a long way (or seems to anyhow) with breaking the ice. Of course, if you CAN speak the local language - particularly the local dialect, that helps wonders as well.

Finally, just like anywhere else, some of it depends on how "service worthy" you behave yourself. If you have issue (or even not) and immediately go on the offensive, things will generally not go well for you. You may get what you want done with bare politeness and civility but you won't get the "above and beyond" that makes people think to themselves what fantastic service they've received.

Re: customer service question

Well apart from the language or swiss dialect I would say that Swiss people like to tell Bernese people are slow. Not sure about the Service Desk, most big companies have their Service Desk outsourced to India or Eastern Europe. Normally a Call to a Service Desk takes time.. at least 2min- 5min just for charging.. the rest depends on your problem and the service desk agent how quick he can give the solution.

Re: customer service question

To be perfectly honest, I think customer service in Switzerland sucks. That is my experience at least.
It doesn't seam to matter if you speak English, German or don't say anything at all, sometime you are just completely ignored and I have too many times asked my self if I am simply not wanted as a customer.
One of my favorite women wear shop is called Orsay, and when I say favorite I mean nice and feminine cloths with reasonable prices. On the downside is the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I'm never offered help, and it it seams like you have to go on your knees and ask 'Please can I pay?'. Once I had a few things I wanted to buy, went to the cashier and there was no other customers around. When I came to her table and put my cloths down, she walked away and I just stood there alone like an idiot for some minutes before another staff member came to take my money. Many other times I have had to wait for the cashier to finishing a phonecall, or a general chat with another staff member.

And don't get me started on Orange.

For restaurants, in general I feel the service is lousy. You normally don't get the waiter to check with you, you have to wait and wait and wait to be able to order or get the bill. According to my American friend I am very rude when I get fed up and ask loudly if I can order or pay, but for how long must you wait and feel ignored?
Exception for the restaurants is ZicZack. I have always gotten 110% service there.

Needless to say; I NEVER tip (except at ZicZack) I don't see any reason at all to do so.
