Getting rid of cardboard

I have been very disorganised and never quite got around to leaving my cardboard and papers outside for the bin men to collect. Unfortunately I am now leaving Zurich before the next collection in my area and have a fair amound of cardboard and magazines to get rid of.

Any ideas on if there is a refuse tip in Zurich where I can rock up and dump it all?

Re: Getting rid of cardboard

The swiss call it 'recycling centre', they take:

batteries
paper & magazines
cardboard
electronic bits n bobs
nesspresso capsules
clothes & shoes
metal
glass
plastic 'pet' bottles
aluminium tins, cans
normal tuna cans etc...
cds

anything else they charge by weight (not a great deal)

Im not sure where there is one in Zurich but im sure that there are a few about, you should have no problem getting rid of your cardboard & (porn) magazines.

p.s. i hate your tetris score

Re: Getting rid of cardboard

Your local refuse tip should have facilities for this. I know our one in A.a.A has. Our collecitons are only once every 2 months, so I use it frequently (and it's easier than bundling everything up).

Re: Getting rid of cardboard

Turn down the road that takes you to Coop and McDonalds (I'm sure you know where these are if you've ever driven through there).

A few hundres metres after McDonalds the road does a 90 degree left turn and has a juction on the corner. Turn right into the junction and it's there: Schmid.

They take most things free, but charge for styrofoam. Once every 6 motnhs or so they have a 'special waste' drop off. This is for old paints, checmicals and containers.

The Gemeinde have started collection points where they take most things including styrofaom for free. Can't remember the frequency/dates. they start around 08:00 in one point then move on, covering several places locally.

Thanks. I'm a regular at the Coop so I should find it OK. The new collection service is useless for people who work.

I agree - it would mean going in late one morning. I'll do this once every so often if I have the need to get rid of Styrofoam. Tend to do the cardboard, papers, glass and cans Sat morning, they are open till 11:30 I think.

During the week they open around 7ish, then close for 'nuni' and lunch.

Re: Getting rid of cardboard

Here's an another idea-we once went to IKEA once with a whole carload of cardboard (we're also disorganized about this)-they have a place in the parking garage that is self-service. We weren't the only ones with this idea either!

Where do you buy new Zurich-Sacks from?

As my flat came with a few which are running out; had a look in co-op and couldn't find any

You have to ask at the till, they're not on the shelves - ask for 35 litres, that's the standard size which fits into the kitchen bins.

You'll need to ask for 10- as far as I know you can't just buy 1 (they come in rolls)!

Re: Where do you buy new Zurich-Sacks from?

what colour is the size you want? You'll tend to ask for the colour that you desire.

But you have to ask; they used to be on the shelves about 15 years ago but they were being stolen.

Try "eine Rolle fünfunddreissig-Liter Zürich-Säcke bitte". You'll get a roll of 10, which is about 25.-- or 30.-- CHF (too long ago since I lived in the city...).

But they would understand you nonetheless, I'm sure, even if you asked for one.

Re: Zurisacks (Zurich rubbish bags) discussion

Hi, where does one deposit the white Zurich bags?
There are big grey bins I believe in my apartment block and on the road ( probably belonging to neighbouring buildings) I thought you could use these at any time to drop your full Zurich bag. However mine looks locked/tied down. Is that normal? Can I deposit my Zurich sack into the big grey bins only on particular days? Do I need something else (i.e. key or something similar) to be able to open the bin!
Very confused and have a smelly bag so any ideas would be good!

Re: Zurisacks (Zurich rubbish bags) discussion

Have you tried using your key to open it? If it works it belongs to your block and you are allowed to throw your Zürisäcke there any time during the week. If it doesn't work, ask your Verwaltung which bin you may use and where you can get a key?
