I am starting a new job in Basel in January and I have some concerns in getting the residence permit. I actually do have a non-empty criminal record and I wanted to know to what extent this could prevent me from getting such a permit. I suppose that I have to mention these offenses in the application form.

More information:
I am from France, and in France we have 3 different records on the only one accessible on request is the "level 3 record" where only serious things are mentioned, like prison, murders and so on. I do not have any of these, just some problems with alcohol and marijuana a while ago (2007 approx). These things may be in the "level 2 record", some might have been erased and moved to level 1.

do they do criminal checks on EU citizens registering here? I can't remember any EU colleague stating this happened....
