Re: Why become Swiss

One of the draw backs to becoming a Swiss citizen is that you and/or your children may have to undertake military service.

For a neutral country with zero risk of military conflict, why would that be a negative?

Regarding the previous posters assertion that a C permit may not be renewed, this can only happen under specific circumstances such as committing a crime, bend addicted for a long time on social welfare (not applicable after 15 years residence in the country) and if there is a danger to the country's security because of te individual.

Some useful related threads:

Considering Swiss Citizenship

Is there any reason for not becoming a Swiss citizen if you qualify?

We got Swiss citizenship!!

Reasons for wanting to naturalize

I guess taking up CH citizenship would also mean that one is no longer considered "black sheep"

While I'm not convinced that citizenship guarantees becoming accepted, I think the reasons aren't compelling enough for me at this stage to become Swiss. Not yet!

Yes, but without going into detail both my partner and I will probably out live them.

My partner is Swiss so I suppose our joint assets would go under Swiss law even if I hadn't taken Swiss nationality. Neither of his brothers have had kids and we only have two nieces from my side of the family.

Food for thought.
I am up for adoption

Re: Why become Swiss

It is quite a personal decision that ideally should be taken based on convictions and not on interest.

However ,i guess that is not true for most of us. A big plus i see in the citizenship is the ability to come and go, live elsewhere, without limiting myself and worrying about coming back. Also, as a Swiss citizen, you can be repatrieted at any time should you choose to ask, and not have the money to do so on your own.... One can contact the local embassy for help.

Interesting debate about the legal inheritance laws... But i will note that Italy has very similar dispositions, for it would not make any difference for the OP.
Now, an additional debate would be - does inheritance really follow the law of the deceased country, or rather goes by the laws of the country where the estate is? What is a person is swiss, with property in France and US? Even if a Swiss court decide to follow the law for the swiss estate, how can this be applied in another country? It cannot be expected that a Swiss judgement would be binding for non-swiss notaries (and no, there aren't international agreements). So whould that means in the above case 3 different successions, according to each country's legal disposition?

They provide the option for civil service instead. Also after a certain age, I believe 28 or so, you no longer qualify for military service (too old).

Re: Why become Swiss

It's 30 years this year since I acquired the Swiss passport. It came almost automatically when I married my Swiss partner. I didn't own property then and thoughts of dieing where far from my mind. As to my husbands siblings they already live in the house all 3 brothers inherited from their father, so I reckon I'm safe.

By the country of residence of the deceased.

You can't have different rules for assets/debts held in different countries, it's doesn't work that way.

The estate is the combined global assets.
