Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

Non-Eu L permit holder - Started working in Zurich from Apr 2011, my L-permit will expire on 29 March 2012. Just got fired with my last day 31 March 2012. I have been paying unemployment insurance, automatically deducted from my paycheck.

My plan is to continue job search in Switzerland with student B permit (enroll into German school) from April. Am I still eligible for unemployment benefits with student B permit?

Thank you!!

I would find it highly unlikely. As stated elsewhere on these boards, you have to be available for a job should one come up when you're on benefits. If you're in school, you're not available.

Additionally, if you've only been working here 9 months, you probably don't qualify for benefits anyway.

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

Sorry to hear the bad news. But Corbets is right. You have to have contributed at least 12 months to qualify.

Good luck with your job search.

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

If he started on April 1 and his last day is March 31 then he will have contributed for 12 months.

But you cannot claim unemployment while a student, unless it is some sort of RAV approved/mandated training.

As with all things RAV related, you should go talk to them.

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

guys, I did some more research on unemployment benefits and found this information on AngloInfo. Does anyone know anything about this? or knows who to contact to validate this sentence?

Unemployment benefits are issued at a benefit payment office chosen when registering at the employment office. Benefits are only given to those who continue living in Switzerland. If the beneficiary leaves the country, the payments will be cancelled.

If the residence permit expires during this time it will automatically be renewed for the remainder of the time that benefits are entitled.

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

Thanks guys! I just went to RAV and they told me, YES!

Yes - I am eligible for unemployment benefits
Yes - my resident permit will be automatically renewed during the time I receive unemployment benefits, but not sure what status it will be. I have L permit now, what would it be?

It will most likely remain an "L" (it does say renewed and not changed)

Most likely you will get the same, an L permit.

Sorry....couldn't resist that! If you need an explanation......click. But you might need to wait until tomorrow.

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

however... a lawyer said (the one I'm working with regarding employment termination) that I should get an immigration lawyer to make sure the permit renewal goes well... although RAV says yes, not good enough.

what do you think? should I get immigration lawyer to be sure?

Re: Fired! L-permit and unemployment benefits

I would trust the RAV, they are generally good with advice.

What I would add, is that your unemployment benefits will be for the reduced period as you started after the 18 out of 24 months working rule change. I believe you will get 12 months benefit rather than the 24 month benefit period. But as far as I know the payout level would still be the same
