I tried searching for an answer to this question.

I will be starting a PhD in Zurich and part of my application for a student visa is the need to provide my passport and copies of it.

Will I need to submit my actual passport for them to hold? Or do they give it back when you submit?

I'm just trying to imagine trying to leave the country again/return without one

Is this also the case when a university/business/employer submit on your behalf? They must also take your passport with them?

If you're an EU national it is up to you - not the employer - to submit the paperwork.

Hi, the school are handling everything on my behalf, as a part of my fees, which is why I asked. I only received confirmation of that today, which is why I was asking how they would handle the passport issue.
