New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

Hi all,

As many job recruitment advertisements write - Permit B or C holder. How does it work? If the permit B subjects to a fixed employer. To find another employer who asks the employee to already have a Permit B sounds strange to me.

Can anyone please explain?

Or the employer just asks the moment the person get employed holds a Permit B. And will assist the changement of employer to the current Permit B? Is it a relatively simple procedure to go through?

Many thanks!

Re: New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

I believe a great many B permits are open, that means you have the right to change jobs. So it seems to me that the employers u are seeing are seeking someone with an open B permit.

The permit B holders who are tied to an employer are quite more restricted. Some employers dont want to hassle with employees who are tied to one company because its basically like trying to hire someone with no permit.

Thank you very much! Then how to tell if my permit B is an open one or not? Is it written in the permit itself or there is a way to find it out?

Thanks alot!

Re: New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

It's code for "we can't be bothered to apply for a B permit, so this job is for Swiss nationals, C permit holders or EU/EFTA B permit holders only."

ETA "and people with Swiss spouses" (thank you, st2lemans)

It is written on the permit, or at least used to be.

Re: New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

I found my old permit B from 2009, when it was still a little book. There is a line Aufenthaltszweck/But du séjour/Scopo del soggiorno. Mine is conjoint suisse, so I'm assuming permit B tied to employment would have something different. Unfortunately, I had to turn in my card format permit B when I got a C, so I'm not sure if it is on the newer ones.

Re: New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

In my B permit, it writes - Une activite independante est soumise a autorisation.

I wrote an Email to the conton to ask. They said I have to ask my new employer to fill up a form, and can not start working in the new job unless I have the new Permit.

For the reply it seems really simple..

Re: New job requires you already hold a Permit B?

I've heard about the 'new' B permits - they're in the form of a credit card right? Well they're not available for EU citizens (IIRC from another thread on here). In any case I have the old style booklet type, and under 'Aufenhaltszweck' I have... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. So that means I have no restrictions?

Yes, a pinkish credit card format card. It has been like this for some time, not new.

Do you have any idea if I could change job with this permit? Many thanks!

It is like this for non EU citizens, if you are from the EU you still get the old booklet style (in Zurich at least).
