My wife is coming on a B visa. She will be working in Neuchatel and we want to live in Vaud. My company is starting the paper work for me to work in Switzerland (from home office). They said it may be that we cannot work in one canton and live in another. Is there any truth to this?

I know many, many people who work in Vaud and live in canton Fribourg and it's no problem, it's rather common here with the price of housing along the lake region

Is your wife possibly not from an EU/EFTA country?

She's Canadian and I'm American.

In which case I suspect you will have to live where one of you pays taxes (and if you will be working from home, that probably means where she works). Think about it - why would a canton go to all the effort of giving you a permit only for you to live elsewhere and pay taxes elsewhere, when they could save that permit in the quota for someone who will pay taxes locally?

Your permit is issued in the Kanton you live in, not where you work.

I lived in BL, worked in VD, permit from BL.
I lived in BL, worked in BS, permit from BL.
My friend lived in ZG and worked in BS, permit from ZG.
Two friends now live in ZH, work in ZG and BS, permits from ZH.

I have no idea if the kantons have to 'trade' permits or whatever, but this is who issues them.

You can definately work in one Canton and life in another. It just has to be specified whilst applying.

I am non-EU with unrestricted B-permit and I work in Kanton Bern and live in Kanton Solothurn... So no problem at all....

I originally worked and lived in Bern. However decided to move to Zurich, but was still working in Bern. It wasn't a problem, although I had to apply to the Zurich authorities to get clearance for the move (which was a bit odd). I now pay taxes in Zurich (and not Bern).

Many hoops to jump through, but it is possible.

Meant to say that I am on a non-EU visa which is connected to one company.

My friend is working in Geneva and he lives in VAUD. He tried to apply the permit from VAUD, but it took him one year to get it.

One more question is about the tax: the tax in VAUD and geneva is different.
