C Permit automatic renewal?

My 5 year C permit will be coming up for renewal in August.

Is renewal of this automatic so long as my circumstances have not changed? Do I need to get in touch with my gemeindesamt or will they send me some kind of notification?

I did search but I couldn't find anything about automatic renewal.

Look at C permit, turn it over, read back page. Does it state automatic renewal? No.

Err, I hate to piss on your parade, but mine was renewed without me taking any action. It may be that because it was physically passing through there hands last year (as it had been lost and found) they simply took the opportunity to renew it then, although the issue date of 2010 would imply they sent it then.

So whether you'll always be sent a new one automaticall I don't know, but it seems that you don't need to apply for renewal, despite it clearly stating so on the reverse. Then again, I didn't apply for the C permit in the first place - it just automagically appeared some time after the fifth year of Bs had ended, so maybe someone's just looking out for me...

Well that is wonderful that you have a guardian angel.

Please answer the OPs question. The answer is on the back: it states clearly that you have to apply for a renewal within 2 weeks, before the expiry date.

Yes, I know (now) what it says, but I'm suggesting that in practice it may not be necessary. I've never even noted, let alone acted on, the expiry date of any permit I've had in the 12 years I've been here, and never had any problems as a result. (in BS and OW cantons, if it's relevant).

Clearly the best bet is for the OP to call the issuing cantonal office to check, but given my experience it's clearly worth checking up rather than just accepting your black and white answer.

Re: C Permit automatic renewal?

Look at it this way: if the OP follows your advice and does nothing he may get it renewed, everything will be OK.

If the OP follows your advice and does nothing the C permit may lapse and in September he finds he has no C permit. As a result no permission to work until the permit has been re-instated, which takes about 6 weeks, and will probably be a B permit.

If the OP follows my advice, he takes an hour off work, goes to the Fremdenpolizei in the issuing Canton 2 weeks before the due date, gets the new Permit C, pays the fee, everything OK.

So which would be the best course of action? Your way, or my way?

If the OP follows your advice and does nothing ...
Can I suggest that you calm down and re-read what I wrote? At no point did I suggest that he do nothing. Indeed in the follow-up post I specifically suggested he contact the authorities to check if any action was required.

But your assumption that he must go to an office to renew, whilst you may have no problem, can represent a major issue for some people, unconfident, poor language skills, afraid of bureaucracy, lazy or whatever else may be the cause, so to suggest there's no other possible course of action is not perhaps the best advice.

When my one expired the local Kreisbüro just sent a letter saying the new one was ready. Didn't have to do a thing!

In fact when we went to collect it they gave us a free set of wine glasses and a big hug and kiss.

So ner ner ner ner ner to you!

Cheers,
Nick

As far as I know, you are legally entitled to a renewal of a C Permit as long as you are still living in Switzerland and there are no disqualifying circumstances that would revoke your C Permit.

Circumstances detailed in the law right here: http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/142_20/a63.html

Thanks for the responses. This will be the second time i receive a C permit. Im pretty sure last time I did not have to do anything but it was 5 years ago and my memory isnt that good.

What I wasnt sure was, if my employer somehow initiates the renewal (in which case I would have to ask my employer). However, from what it seems, this is not the case.

Re: C Permit automatic renewal?

Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? Because our C permits are due to be renewed in June and I can't find any form on the Fribourg canton migration website for applying to renew a C permit. The only relevant form I can find is "Demande d'autorisation d'exercer une activité lucrative" and it specifically says it's not for C permit renewals. http://www.fr.ch/spomi/files/pdf38/d...crative_fr.pdf
None of their other forms seem to apply.

The ch.ch. website just says:
"Applications to renew a residence permit must be submitted to the commune of residence no earlier than three months and no later than two weeks prior to date of expiry of the residence permit. You will need to present your residence permit, a valid passport (which must remain valid for at least three months after the date of expiry of the residence permit) and (if available) the letter notifying you that your residence permit is about to expire.

Contact the commune where you live for more detailed information."

But again, it doesn't mention any forms you might need to fill in and there's no mention at all on my commune website about renewing permits and what you need to do.

I'm feeling very !

Re: C Permit automatic renewal?

Having renewed my C permit 3 times, each time I would get a form sent to me about 2 months before expiry. I filled it in, paid some money & 2 weeks later had a new permit.

Why not visit the commune and ask? In Lausanne, there is a special single office that deals solely with Swiss Citizens and Permit C holders.

I fell for that when I thought I would get a renewal information from the canton, only to find my permit had expired half a year ago and nobody had told me here

Mimster has no particular reputation at present
Re: C Permit automatic renewal?

Irrespective of other people's experience, and from the threads, the answer ranges the full spectrum and everything in-between.

From a practical and common sense point of view, in my opinion, the best way is to take reonsibility on your own to proactively renew your permit (B or C). Then you can have your own story to tell next time this topic comes up ;-)

Re: C Permit automatic renewal?

Yes, I may well contact my commune and the cantonal migration office to find out how to renew. As I've changed my nationality recently I need to let them know about that anyway.

As we've been away for the last couple of weeks the post has been on hold so I'll see if anything arrives this week and then start checking. I don't want to be caught out as you were MacGregor's Daughter which is why I'm interested in how others have had theirs renewed Mimster. Guess all the differences are due to changes in procedures over the years and the cantons each doing their own thing. I won't be sitting back and waiting for things to happen you can be sure; I worry too much to do that.
