I had to confirm for someone that the photo they sent in was indeed the person who was applying for the passport and that I'd known this person for at least five years. Is that not the case any more? My passport got issued by the embassy in Geneva, do they not do passports any longer?

You're scaring me a bit - mine expired in 2008 and I need to get a new one at some point.
I would advise that you dont leave it too long, if you have another valid passport eg. Swiss send a copy of the photopage with your application, or a copy of your current drivers licence or some other current id, you shouldnt need to send originals unless your appearance has changed dramatically. If a passport is expired more than 10 years the issuing office can ask the applicant to undertake an interview at either the office, if they are in that country, or the Embassy of the country they have made the application from.

Geneva no longer issues passports, they are issued from Paris.

As the UK does not have identity cards, historically you had to ask a Bank manager, Lawyer, Accountant , Priest, JP etc who had known you for at least 2 years.

Since the advent of digital passports, as long as the person can be recognised, you don't need the photo reverified.

UK passports are no longer issued in Geneva, I had 2 from them.

You do have to have the photographs verified if your passport has expired more than 2 years. Outside of the UK you do not require a UK citizen as a countersignatory, you do in the UK.

The first UK biometric passports were not issued until 2006, and initially they were only issued to diplomats and in Washington DC therefore there are, at the moment, very few "regular" biometric passports that need to be renewed.

Just a guess, but perhaps he called the UK before he went out there and got his passport renewed?

It's not all about you!
Exactly, I then made the appointment, booked my flight. All very easy.

My passport was biometric, it had 8 years to go but the chip had died, same problem with the new one, it's in my jeans pocket 365 days a year.

I wished to renew my passport, rather than replace a defective passport, as you cant replace a defective passport in 4 hours, the helpful man from the call centre told me that!

Were you asked any special questions as you don't live in the UK? Just out of curiosity of course

Yes it is horrendous

that included the initial passport charge of 72.50

At least UK passports are valid 10 years, unlike some countries it is only 5

I think you will find they did for a very short time, you could also hold onto your original old passport whilst the new one was being processed, if you asked very nicely! I had to collect the new one from the Zurich office which is now closed.

Last time I entered the UK & the chip was not working, I asked if it was a problem & was told it's quite common.

So it's cheaper for me to do the whole fancy express thing in the UK than to apply from abroad with them having three weeks to sort it? That makes no sense to me...

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Is there a workaround? Going through the process on the site I arrive at 179 Euros. Which is more than a Swiss passport AND ID card O_o

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Hi again,

Since I am going to London in May, I called the advice line and booked a premium appointment. Pretty easy to do in the end. They are open on Saturdays which was a pleasant surprise. Will report back here how it goes and if it was as easy as advertised!

I presume that is through Paris, Shows the basic cost for the passport of 155 Euro.
Presume that has something to do with being supplied outside of UK, so they need to provide office/personnel there and no doubt send stuff back and forth to UK.

The basic price in UK, no fast tracking, is either pounds 72.50 or 81.75 via the Post Office.

Some years back in UK when they first started that everyone had to have their own passport for travel, i.e. including children, there was a back-log.
There was a Who Ha at the time. Then Woosh they solved the problem, but then sky rocketed the price of a British Passport.

That department is getting a lot of money, no doubt they have plush offices and the top people getting well paid including pensions etc
