Hi All,

Just revisiting this rather old thread as my UK passport expires in December, so I'm now investigating how to renew it. I am leaning towards using the premium service when I visit in July, but am just curious to ask those who have already used that service: on the application forms did you put your own current residential address in Switzerland? Or that of family members still living in the UK? (eg our bank correspondence and so on still goes to my parents' UK address)

Thanks!

G

You put the address of where your staying in the UK .

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Hey

I am from zimbabwe, and now live here in switzerland, i renewed my Passwort Last Year, and put my Swiss Adresse, got my renewal with in a week, no problem.
if You Need Any help there is a pdf on The Passwort page that Helps you fill out the form at every step. I do believe however that they have or will be creating a platform for people living out of the uk to apply for their new passports on line, so have a look to see if that is active yet.

Hope this helps

I was not in the uk and I applied via mail from Switzerland. Like I said, had no problems and got it back in a week. I had my swiss address on the forms, not my address from back home in Zimbabwe or my uk address.

I followed the link you provided and unless I'm not understanding it correctly you do still have to post your application if you are resident overseas.

How else are they going to get the seriously ugly photo you had taken in the local photo booth and insert it Into your new passport?

You have to apply on-line and print out the document that is produced, sign it and send it off with any other documents/photos as required. I had printed out the forms before they switched to online only and went back to the website to check something, only to find that I had to start again as the standard paper forms are no longer valid.

My passport arrived yesterday, and I'm sure it takes longer than it used to. I called to make sure that they'd received it (I'd sent it registered mail, but the website hadn't updated to show they'd received it), only for the woman to say that it usually takes at least 10 working days before it gets registered on the system.

They have recently changed the system and overseas passport renewals are no longer handled by the FCO - it's all beign done in the UK by the home office and they are not (yet) up to the task from the sound of messages I've seen on other forums. The situation is particularly bad for first passport applications for kids.

If you have the chance to go to the UK and use the priority processing I'd do that unless you can afford to be without your passport for 2-3 months.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

I sent my passport off to the UK for renewal on 19th March, and received a new one on 24th April. It really is a most beautiful document.

6 weeks is about right, I got my damaged passport replaced about 5 weeks ago. They have reduced the price so possibly got a flood of applications since.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

We applied in April to renew our daughters passport and when it didn't arrive after 4 weeks we spoke to them in UK and we were told it hadn't even been reviewed!!

As we had a planned trip to Singapore we were told to go to Bern for an emergency travel document which included an interview of our daughter to make sure we weren't abducting her

We made a day of it and typically when we got back to Zurich we had the DHL delivery doc in our postbox!! So we wasted a day and many CHF!? But we did enjoy our day in Bern.

In summary it took just over 4 weeks to renew her passport

This may be why:

Claiming 97% are done within the deadline, but not much help if you're one of the 3% who aren't.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Remember when you fill out the online form for application you create a username+password so you check the status of application at any time... It took about 6 weeks for mine to get done and I applied just before the Minister announced the 47£ reduction . At least I have it now, time to renew the ESTA ...

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

On BBC TV today's parliamentary question time the prime minister was asked about the delay in passport renewals.

He answered, "There is an unusual extra backlog of 300,000 applications (!!**??) and only 10% of applications are NOT being met within the normal 6 week time period"

So folks, if you want a passport quickly, better go over and get one personally.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Also worth noting that as of today (according to a statement by Mrs. May in parliament, quoted by the BBC)
- renewal requests can be given a 1 year extension and
- expat children can get a ETD instead of a first passport

No info on exactly how this will work

Indeed, basic problem seems to be they centralised all passport renewals in UK but did not staff up to meet the well documented demand. They said that they would minimise their usual checks so if there is anything dodgy in your application then send it now. . What a bunch of t*ssers. Pity the UKIP will likely be no better, not that I like theUKIP but we really need a fundamental change.

It's always busy this time of year so they should know better by now. People have booked their summer hols and realise they need new passports before they go.
