Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Here is the procedure if you want/need to extend your current (expiring) British passport for a further 12 months (free of charge):

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

From today - Monday 16th June one may telephone the nearest British Embassy/Consulate to make an appointment:

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

I posted off my old passport around 15th May and I've just been informed by the online system that it's been dispatched. I've also received a text from DHL saying it'll arrive tomorrow. Well, I assume it's the passport and not the supporting documents, but either way it'll be arriving very soon.

So, just over a month from receipt to dispatch.

And this includes a delay as they rejected my first set of photos and I had to retake and resend new ones. The standard photo booths in the stations here take photos with the face too low (apparently, at least that's what mine was rejected for! I think I was just unlucky though). I cycled over to Germany and did them at a photo shop where they enter "UK Passport" into their computer and it sorts out all the measurements automatically before printing.

Interesting, as I know from bitter experience over the years that the consulate in Geneva simply doesn't answer the telephone.... Ever.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Given the mess in the UK and not wanting to risk any delay with passport renewal ...
Here's what I found out thanks to the post from Fish&Chips:
I've just phoned the Consular section of the Berne Embassy and, despite worries about whether the call would even be answered (Berne is obviously NOT Geneva), actually spoke to a real live person who answered my questions.
Short answer:
Yes, a 1-year extension is possible, but only once.
Only if passport will expire in the next 3 months (or 7 months, depending on destination).
A trip to Berne and an appointment (arranged by phone) will be necessary and some sort of stamp is put in the passport; it does not take long, apparently.
A basic application form has to be completed (available for downloading).
Note: Travellers to the US will need a valid visa:
"Extended passports are not valid for entry into the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme."

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Do note that my renewal took 5 weeks, including a week lost taking and posting a new set of photos. So I'd reckon on a one-month turnaround - it may not be worth the hassle of going to Bern and getting extensions.

Note that depending on which country you want to visit, they may not accept the extension anyway.

The gov.uk website publishes a helpful list of countries that will accept the extended passport:

A friend got his passport renewal in 3 weeks recently ( it came back last week) so I think a month turnaround time is probably a pretty fair estimate at the moment.
I think it's first time applications particularly for newborns that are the really long ones as they have to do more checks before issuing them.

Just renewed my UK passport on line, complete process including sending photos, took just over 3 weeks. DHL just delived a large envelope with a small passport lost in one corner of it. Good way of not knowing what is in the post.

Just wait until you get the next DHL envelope with your old, cut up passport in it.

Our son's passport is due for renewal in February next year and we have a trip planned for October so I'm trying to work out the best time to send it off for renewal.
I'm beginning to wish we got his Belgian citizenship before we left now as it would have made life so much easier.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

We are currently having problems with the passport photo for our 6 year old son. It is a passport renewal.

Just a heads up should anyone else be in the same position - for children with disabilities, until the age of 6, the regular case examiners have the discretion to forego the strict photo requirements (meaning that mouth open/teeth showing/ face pullled jn a funny way, even smiles are all to be permitted at any case examiner's discretion). After the age of six, it is much more difficult and certified letters (as well as authorised translations if not in English) are required regarding the disability and the reasons for difficulties in taking the correct photo and this has to be dealt with by certain passport examiners meaning additional delays and costs (authorised translations are expensive) etc.

Wish we had realised this as we would have taken the simple route of renewing it just before his 6th birthday.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

British passport workers are on strike today over levels of staff and pay.

The passport offices will be open today, but there will be no processing. There are 360'000 applications already waiting in the offices.

The sooner it's outsourced the better, they should all be sacked, paid statutory redundancy, not a penny more.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Update to my earlier post -
Based on other EF comments (thanks!), I decided not to do the one-year passport renewal via the British Embassy as I'd have to repeat the process next year and I didn't need my passport in such a hurry anyway.

I sent off my old passport and declaration form to the UK (after completing the online part) on 4 August. Today, 18 August, exactly two weeks later, I received my brand new replacement delivered by DHL! I'm very impressed with this remarkably swift turnaround and I will stop reading the doom-and-gloom reports in the Daily Mail from now on.

It looks like the passport office is running smoothly for renewals - I checked online after one week and had confirmation that the passport had been received and was being processed. A couple of days after that, the status was that it had been dispatched.

One point to note: when renewing online, remember to note down the user name and password assigned - this will enable you to track the status of the renewal.
