UK Passport Renewal - help!

Hi all,

I will shortly need to get my UK passport renewed - it expires April 2014 but I have a trip to America in October 2013 planned, so I think that is less than the mandatory amount of time left on the passport for travel to America.

I understand the sending off to Paris etc etc, but finding the instructions for filling it out slightly challenging. English is my first language, so no excuses, but I am finding the accompanying notes more or a hinderance than a help. I'm wondering if anyone has similar circumstances to me and has successfully applied for a renewal...

Main questions:

1. Do they need both my parents' passport details? These haven't changed since I got my passport 9 years ago.

2. Do I need to attach another photograph? The last one was when I was 20, and aside from being more ruggedly handsome, not much has changed in the last 9 years.

3. I have to travel to the UK in May, do I need my passport to do this, and will I be able to get in/out of CH without it? Alternatively, I need to travel to Luxembourg in July, will be by train...do I need my passport for this?

I ask as I hear it takes ~4 weeks to process fully.

Thanks for any advice,
StirB

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

1 if you are over 16 you do not need your parents details if it is a renewal of an existing passport

2 You will need 2 new photographs.

3 you will not be allowed to enter the UK without a valid passport.

Some of your questions are answered here

You need a current and valid passport or other ID to enter (or exit) the U.K. as it's not in the schengen area.

You can get away with it just about if you are a young child travelling with your family and your documentation has expired but that is entirely up to the discretion of immigration (the wife forgot, not me!)

You could possibly go to Luxembourg without any problems but the U.K, not a chance.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

If you are going to UK in May, the best option perhaps is to have it done while you are there.

There is a 1-day premium service for renewals (though more expensive), but much more efficient

I can also recommend this. It costs quite a bit more, but I really needed my passport to be processed on time and so I put the cost down to anti-screw-up insurance. Too many of my friends have had their applications lost, delayed or incorrectly rejected for me to trust them.

You have to make an appointment fairly soon beforehand though, and the weekend appointments go fast. You can go to any of the offices though (London, Liverpool, Peterborough, Glasgow, Newport, Belfast and Durham).

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

If you look up the UK Site, you can make a personal appointment in advance and get your passport Renewal done within 24hrs in London. They charge extra for that service, but sounds like would suit you.

No idea if too late now to get appointment for May

Yes you can apply in advance for new passport, not sure how far in advance, no doubt the site will advise.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Peterborough's a good place to get a one-day replacement passport compared with London as nobody ever goes there so there shouldn't be much of a waiting list.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

One thing to be aware of if you plan to renew your passport whilst in the UK, especially on an expedited service and you are resident outside the UK, you may well be asked for additional documentation to prove your eligibility.

Certainly when I worked in an overseas passport office regular renewals outside the country of residence were always treated with additional scruitiny. Before anyone says anything I know now renewals are from Paris, but if you are resident in Switzerland and renew at a UK office you will probably get asked why you are doing that and they will almost certainly contact the office your previous passport was issued to check those records.

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Hi all,

I think the best plan is probably to wait 'til I get back from London, then courier it off to Paris ASAP. I should get it back at the end of May that way, plenty of time before the Luxembourg trip.

Thanks for the advice,
StirB

You do not get asked any additional questions renewing in a UK passport office as a non resident. Why would you, you are not forced to use the Paris service. You have to provide a UK address, but the address of the Hotel you are staying at is accepted.

Don't forget that you need to make an appointment for this service. From memory you can only do this 2 weeks in advance.

It's a really simple process. Make appointment, turn up 15 mins beforehand, with form, photos and fee. Come back 3 hours later for Passport.

If you have any doubts, ring the UK Passport hotline. They are very helpful.

It is not nonsense.

It is nonsense that UK citizens are entitled to a UK passport. All UK passports are actually the property of the UK Government and they grant you passport facilities, which involves issuing you with a document (the passport), which the Government can withdraw at anytime.

I have, in the past, refused UK citizens a passport, and also I am aware of many cases of UK citizens who reside overseas being unable to renew passports on visits to the UK and being told the passport must be renewed in the country of residence.

Now of course you can refuse to believe me, but I can assure you that it is truth.

Well I had no problem renewing mine in London taking the 4 hour premium service, so you must have been a real pain in the arse jobsworth!
FWIW I phoned and asked the enquiries line & they said it was no problem at all.

Its always the "forum legends" who are the know-it-alls and tend to be the pain in the arses!

Truth hurts sometimes but the fact is there are many many UK citizens who are not entitled to UK passports for a variety of reasons, I didnt make the rules, only applied them.....

I never at any point said that you cannot renew a passport in the UK if you live overseas, I said in some cases you may be asked for additional documentation to prove your eligibility

Really you phoned the UK (or actually the call centre in Ireland who will tell you anything) to prove a point? how sad......

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

Can be if someone constantly loses Passports, I'm not talking one or two, this can be 5 or 6 in a short space of time, although in the majority of cases a severly restricted validity passport is normally issued usually 6-12 months, then extended at the end of the period.

Also been rejected for the legitimacy of the documents produced on first time applications, or if the previous passport was fraudulently issued.

Overseas its more if its a renewal of a passport thats been expired more than 20 years and the applicant cant provide any original documents to prove who they are or cant prove how they initially got into the country in the first place (not unknown in North America)

Re: UK Passport Renewal - help!

I had to confirm for someone that the photo they sent in was indeed the person who was applying for the passport and that I'd known this person for at least five years. Is that not the case any more? My passport got issued by the embassy in Geneva, do they not do passports any longer?

You're scaring me a bit - mine expired in 2008 and I need to get a new one at some point.

Premium Service, that is the name for the same day service, you must make the appointment in advance, whether it is London or another UK Office.

Just a guess, but perhaps he called the UK before he went out there and got his passport renewed?
