Marriage visa- financial support

Hi everyone. I have been lurking into this forum for awhile during my type D visa prep for a marriage to a Swiss citizen and have found all the info super helpful!

I have a question regarding guaranteeing of financial support for the spouse but could not find any direct answer to this, so decided to create a new posting here. Please help share your knowledge, first hand experiences etc!

After about 11 weeks since I filed type D visa through the Swiss consulate, my fiance in Switzerland received a letter requesting him to provide info on the evolution of our relationship (where we met, how long we dated, how many time I visited Switzerland etc.) One of the questions asked in the letter is also the guaranteeing of financial support for me.

Q1. Does anyone know how much money in bank account will qualify for "guaranteeing of financial support"?

Q2. Can we show my bank account statement instead of his to prove that I'm self-sufficient?

Any info would be highly appreciated as we're quite stuck and afraid to mess up the entire visa application by trying to bend the rules.

Thanks a ton!!

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

It depends on the canton so your fiance would need to ask them for what they'd consider adequate funds.

I'm sorry, but no, your funds don't count. He has to show he can support you, not the other way around. You may need to put the application on hold until he has a new job and can provide the necessary proofs.

@ Medea Fleecestealer

Thanks for the reply. I told my fiance to check with Geneva canton office regarding the amount needed for the financial support.

Regarding whether we can show my bank statement instead, I got the different answer than yours from Swiss Consulate. They said that it's absolutely possible to submit my saving statement showing enough funds as well as his, so I guess that part is a good news for us! phew.

Oh yes, that is good news rubyjung1015. I didn't think they'd let you do that as technically you're his dependent. That'll certainly make it easier if you can.

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

You'd have to check with Zurich migration to see what they say. Each canton is different with what it will and will not accept. The fact that Geneva says it's okay for them doesn't mean Zurich will be the same. And Zurich seem to have been applying the rules more strictly since the recent vote to curb immigration in February last.

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

My experience as a Swiss citizen in Zurich was that the Migrationsamt and Standesamt did not require any specific kind of visa from my wife (i.e. no D visa). Coming in on a tourist visa was OK although not quite the proper way to do it - but they were only relaxed about it because I was Swiss.

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

Hi! Updating everyone on the progress to share my hands on experience with the marriage visa. (GE canton)

My visa was finally approved after long 4 months since the initial application in Aug was submitted at the consulate! I just picked it up earlier today and it's truly the best Christmas gift ever

In hindsight, I think my case took a little longer than usual because I filed all docs through the consulate in the country where I live. I would say if i had filed my docs via traditional route (ie- applying in home country) it would have taken 12weeks, or 3months, as advised by the consulate.

In terms of the financial support matters, we basically sent both bank statements from me and him. In addition, we included both of our diploma to prove that we have ability to find a good paying job that will support ourselves as soon as I enter switzerland. We also submitted our photos from multiple trips together and the essay of our love story (how we met, how we fell in love, how we maintained long distance relationship, and WHY we want to be together now.)

All in all, what we tried to focus most on (although it's subjective based on our own particular case) are; we are a genuine couple, not the ones trying to fool the government, and 2) we can be a good edition to the Swiss society.

I don't how many nights I spent googling about other peoples episode on their marriage visa process, while I was waiting on mine.. I was so nervous about becoming an illegal immigrant! Lol. I know visa can be quite stressful for everyone, so I hope my sharing can at least help provide the info some are looking for.

Good luck! And Merry Christmas

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

There are lots of threads about this here on the forum so do a search on marrying in Switzerland and have a read through. This may help your search too:

https://www.ch.ch/en/civil-wedding-ceremony/

I must warn you though that it's difficult and takes a long time to get permission to marry here. You'll need to provide various documents (get him to check with his commune/gemeinde office on what ones exactly) and they'll all need to be translated into a Swiss language and may also need to be notarised. It may be easier to marry in another country and simply get the marriage recognised here afterwards.

Thank you for the information.
My fiance came here and stayed with me for 10 days since we had not have enough time we just got engaged and we have decided to marry in Switzerland.
I already get an appointment from the Switzerland embassy and they asked me to prepare some documents. but my question is that how we should prove that we are engaged? with photos? with emails that we have? and for marriage preparing, Could we prepare it when I can join him? or he should do it before it?
Best wishes

Re: Marriage visa- financial support

Yes, anything like that that you have to help prove your relationship is a genuine one and not just a sham to get you into the country and get a permit. The more evidence of a long term, stable relationship you can give them the better.

I think what he needs to do is apply for a fiancée permit for you with the migration office here while at the same time you apply for a Type D visa at the embassy. If the fiancée permit is granted, i.e. they okay you getting married here, then the visa will be issued so you can enter Switzerland legally long term.

This document from the Swiss embassy in Tehran's website tells you more:

They gave me Form D , in the q of no 27, it 's written : in case of family reunion: relationship with the family member in Switzerland :
1- spouse 2- child 3- grandchild 4- dependent ascendant
since we are engaged and we are not married yet, so I cant not choose (spouse) so what I should do with the Q(maybe I should dont reply to to this question,?!)
and ofcourse they gave me another form (Partnership Registration) what is this form? they ask information about wife and husband, but we are just engaged, I should fill this form too? do you any idea about this? Sorry for inconvenience and many questions.
Regards,
