Dependent B permit expired.

Hello Everyone,
I would like to ask about B permit renewal. I am an Indian spouse whose Dependent B permit(Residence Permit) expired while I was in India. My spouse is currently working in Switzerland and has renewed his B permit. Is it possible to renew my B permit while I stay with him on a tourist visa for 3 months duration?

Not sure if that means renewing, does that not mean re-applying?

Re: Dependent B permit expired.

Your spouse should talk to the gemeinde office or the cantonal migrationsamt. Usually a dependent permit is renewed along with the primary permit. If they cooperate, then you might be issued a visa by the Swiss embassy in India quickly.

Ultimately the Swiss consulates will follow the directive of the Federal Office for Migration. They can be contacted at:

In my experience, they provide good information.

IMHO, coming here on a tourist visa not a good idea. It might just prolong the time it needs to get the permit again, and also break the continuity of your residency here. And you might have to leave Switzerland, get a entry visa for long stay stamped, and then come back.

Re: Dependent B permit expired.

Thank you everyone for your prompt response. I guess the easiest way is to contact the authorities further.

With an L permit you're only allowed to be out of the country for 3 months. So your husband will have to apply for a new permit for you I think and you'll need to get a new Type D visa at the embassy/consulate. Get him to check with his canton migration office though to be sure.

Re: Dependent B permit expired.

Last year I had same problem. My wife visited migration office Zurich and asked if she can stay in India for 6 month for the child delivery. They told her that she cannot stay more than 3 month outside Switzerland on dependent L permit so she had to deregister. Now I am applying visa again for my wife and child. Please check with your cantonal migration office if your permit is still valid or not.
