Swiss schengen visa for non-EU

Hello,

My parents are going to apply for a multiple entry swiss visa first time. Before they always had german Schengen visas.

Do they have to visit Switzerland on their first visit or can we just meet somewhere in Schengen Area?

Thanks

Re: Swiss schengen visa for non-EU

I suspect that you are 'supposed' to apply to the country where you intend to spend the most time, but it probably does not matter if you enter/exit directly into that country...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_po..._Schengen_Area

Check the section titled 'Obtaining a Visa'.

The airport transit rules indicate that you should have no problems at all transiting with a Shengen visa issued by another state other than the one you are entering for the first time.

My parents are going to travel by car. They will definitely visit me in Switzerland later. Still, they are worrying because it would be their first swiss visa, and they don`t want to screw this up.

Re: Swiss schengen visa for non-EU

Which country is going to be their main destination? That's the governing factor for the application. From swisspea's link:

"He or she must first identify which Schengen country is the main destination. This determines the State responsible for deciding on the Schengen visa application and therefore the embassy, high commission or the consulate where the traveller will have to lodge the application. If the main destination cannot be determined, the traveller should file the visa application at the embassy, high commission or consulate of the Schengen country of first entry."

If they're going to be in Switzerland most of the time they'd apply to a Swiss embassy/consulate. If it's another Schengen country then that's where they should apply. If they don't know then it should be the country they plan to enter first.

Re: Swiss schengen visa for non-EU

Schengen visa applications generally require fairly extensive documentation of the applicant's planned itinerary and travel arrangements (hotel reservations, flight information, etc., though presumably in cases where one is traveling by car and staying with friends/relatives, a letter of invitation and an outline of the proposed itinerary would be sufficient), so to avoid a rejection on the grounds that the application has been filed in the wrong place, it probably would be best to apply to the country where one is going to spend the most time during any given trip. If that country grants a multiple-entry visa good for more than just the one trip, the visa can of course be used for subsequent trips to Switzerland or anywhere else in the Schengen area (without any need to go to or through the country that issued the visa).

Re: Swiss schengen visa for non-EU

Thanks for your replies. it is fair to say that Switzerland is the main destination during the year. It looks that it is legal to skip Switzerland on their first visit( it will be short, 3-4 days). In the worse case, boarder guards might bother them more than usual, and they would have to prove that Switzerland is the main destination.
