Permit L: Canadian with unlimited contract

Hi all,

A simple and short question: Are there here other Canadians who have an open-end work contract in canton Zurich and have received an L permit?

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks for the reply Sean. However, I am not looking for probability, I am asking for cases. What I heard, is that there is a slight difference within non-EUs for American and Canadian nationals. However, this is appearing not to be correct!

No. but as you probably already know, nationality (non-EU) and duration of the work permit play very important roles here. At least, this WAS what it seemed to be!

Re: Permit L: Canadian with unlimited contract

Keeping in mind the quotas for non-EU permits have been adjusted downward starting this year, this thread might help you sort it out a bit more:

Who/what determines whether you get a B or L permit?

And the thread about the change in the quotas:
CH reduces non EU permits for 2015

Re: Permit L: Canadian with unlimited contract

US and Canadian nationals are treated in the same way as other NON-EU in terms if working permit. So for your question, it is equally normal for a Canadian national to get L permit with unlimited contract, compared to any other NON-EU nationals.

There is however one exception for early C permit. Usually for NON-EU you need 10 years residence before C permit but for US and Canadian citizens it is 5 years. This is not because CH treats US or CA as some superior nationality, it is due to the fact that CH citizens usually get permanent residence status in US/CA after 5 years residence and it is a bilateral equal treatment between CH and US/CA.

Correct but not complete. The treaty between Canada and Switzerland that you also referred to, has two parts. The other part is A RECOMMENDATION (with no legal obligation) for Switzerland or Canada to facilitate the residency permit process for people of the other country. The text for Canadians in CH reads:

La Suisse s’efforcera d’accorder aux citoyens canadiens une autorisation de séjour à l’année ou une autorisation de séjour de courte durée conformément à la législation sur les étrangers pertinente.

Of course, this doesn't guaranty a B, it MAY only facilitate a permit.
