Where to to get answers about extended absence while holding C-permit?

Hello everyone,

After many years here I am looking at going back to Canada, at least for a year or two. I live and work full-time in Zürich. I will be working until the end of March, and planning on going back to Canada sometime in April.

I want to do everything I can to keep my C-permit, in case I change my mind. My understanding is that without doing anything I have only 6 months. I also know this is extendable up to 4 years, but only under special circumstances. (i.e., employment, education, etc.). I am actually considering education in Canada as a possibility. Does anyone know how long I would be required to stay in Switzerland if I were to return every 6 months?

Out of curiosity, what would the procedure be if I were to go on a world-trip lasting longer than 6 months? This is something Swiss people commonly do. Do I, as a foreigner, simply not have that right?

To get specific answers regarding my permit and what I can do, should I go to my Kreisbüro, or the Migrationsamt? Since it's only possible to go during work hours, I would really like to avoid going to either and being told that I need to go to the other.

Thank you in advance for any information!

Re: Where to to get answers about extended absence while holding C-permit?

You need to talk to your gemeinde office as they're the ones who have to give permission for your permit to be put on hold. The permit can be held for a maximum of 4 years so studying abroad shouldn't require you to return every 6 months, providing they accept your reason of course.

If you wanted to go on a world tour lasting more than 6 months - well, you risk losing it. Going on a long holiday isn't a valid/accepted reason for putting a permit on hold. You might think you could go away for say an initial 6 months, return for a month and then go again and you might be lucky and get away with it. But if you have nosy neighbours who notice your absence and report it you could find the permit cancelled. The Swiss expect you to be resident here, not off galivanting around the world.
