when moving within ZH, do I need to deregister from old Gemeinde?

When moving within Kanton Zurich, do I need to deregister from old Gemeinde? Or is it enough to simply go to the new Gemeinde and register there?

Any ideas what I need to bring with me besides auslanderausweis, passport, and the new rental contract?

1. You do not need to deregister from old Gemeinde.
2. You would need to bring CHF 25.- per person as well.

Sorry this is for city Zurich. I am not sure about Kanton Zurich.

When I moved from Kloten to Eglisau, Eglisau refused to register me without un-registering in Kloten.

You need to deregister from one and re-register at the new one within 8 days. Only if you move to another place within the same gemeinde would you only need to tell them and the canton migration office of the change of address.

We are also moving within canton, but to a different commune. For one month we will be paying double rent, so how do we decide which date to de-register?

I guess you deregister from the old place when you move out if the old place into the new one even though you're still paying the rent on the old place.

If you are not Swiss, before moving from one municipality (Gemeinde) to another, you might want to check with the new Gemeinde whether your "clock" will start running again at zero .
By "clock" I mean the time counted as living in your Swiss Gemeinde, relevant for obtaining the the next most secure level of permit (or even naturalisation). Does the new Gemeinde recognise the years you spent in the old Gemeinde?
