Application for Swiss citizenship

Hi,

If you fulfill all the requirements for a Swiss citizenship (living years in Swiss etc.) can you apply for Swiss citizenship if you now live in another country in Europe outside Switzerland?

I hope that someone can help me

Re: Application for Swiss citizenship

No, because you need to be a current resident of Switzerland, i.e. hold a B or C permit, when you apply which you are obviously not. And unless you moved back to the same canton/commune that you were living in before there are several years' of residency requirements in any new canton/commune.

Re: Application for Swiss citizenship

Hi again,

My friend now live in Switzerland and have a C permit. I don't know how the rules are if you leave Switzerland for how long time and you don't have c permit anymore. But if he apply for it now while he live in Switzerland, and during the process move out of the country us that possible?

... unless you're married/born to a Swiss, in which case it's facilitated naturalization - see articles 28, 58a, 58c

I get that you like to help, and it's great that you answer quickly and all that, but you really need to consider all the metrics before jumping on it. There are very different rules for Swiss, 2nd and 3rd nationals, in nearly all cases. Yes, it's unlikely for this case but very little information was given to exclude it.

Your friend will have a very, very hard time proving close ties and integration having emigrated. Given the autonomous freedom of the commune to deny, and the inherent lack of right to appeal, it's more than likely a no go.

Re: Application for Swiss citizenship

Thank you very much for your help

But does that also mean that if he move out of Switzerland, and move back again, then he will have to wait eg. 4 years more (if that is the requirement from the canton) so he can be able to apply for Swiss citizenship, even though he now have lived in same canton for 15 years?

As Unknown had already enquired regarding regular naturalisation I think I was safe to assume he/she doesn't qualify for facilitated.

Swiss citizenship through Regular naturalisation

I'm aware that there is also the possibility of facilitated if certain people qualify for it and would have added that info if they did.
