Visa Authorization

Hello all,
I am extremely confused on my Visa status so any help would be appreciated.

I received a visa authorization a month ago for a study visa in the canton of Vaud. I entered Switzerland on jan 30,2015. I handed in my B-Permit form to my school but have not receive the permit yet. I was reading about the visa process online and it appears I need to go to the local immigration office in Vaud with my passport within 8 days of arrival. Is that the case or is my visa all taken care of by the application of the B-Permit .

If it matters, I am a Canadian citizen and I came to Switzerland directly from Ontario, Canada.

Thanks!

Re: Visa Authorization

You should already have a visa, a D visa in your passport that allows you to enter Switzerland. That is all the visa is for. Your B-permit allows you to live and study here. I'm sure you still need to register with-in 8 days.

As was said, your visa is done. Nothing more do to there. Now you need your permit.

So, yes. That is exactly what you have to do. The school doesn't need your B permit form and they will probably do nothing with it. I'm surprised they took it form you.

Go to the local immigration office where you live, not where your school is.

Re: Visa Authorization

Thanks for replying!

Unfortunately, I never got a stamp in my passport. I was only informed by the school that my visa was approved and received an authorization visa.

Re: Visa Authorization

Then you can try and plead your case with the Vaud migration office and hope they'll stamp the visa in your passport for you - or you'll have to go back to Canada and get it done at the embassy/consulate you applied at in the first place.

And if you think they won't insist on you doing that, well have a read of this recent poster's problems.

Need advice....[permit/visa questions]

Do you actually have this visa? Was it put in your passport by the embassy in Canada? Once it's approved you actually have to collect it!

Re: Visa Authorization

Wait, we are not talking about the stamp from the airport. We are talking about the visa that is pasted into your passport after you get the visa authorization letter. Did you do that?

If not, you're going to have to go to immigrations and ask them to have pity on you and hopefully you won't have to go home to get the visa.

If they do make you get the visa pasted into the passport, then you need to contact the Canadian embassy where you applied and ask if you can get that done in Europe. And pray they will let you pick it up in Paris or Stuttgart or somewhere in Europe.

You should go there tomorrow and apply for your B permit .. and hope they don't make you come back when you have the D visa.

Exactly this.

Do you at last have the authorization letter with you?

Re: Visa Authorization

Thank you everyone for your help. I cannot believe this is happening!

Just a bit more information, the reason why I never got the stamp was because I thought my "visa" was approved and ready to go. I applied for the D visa in the province of Ontario and sent it to the Swiss embassy in Montreal (because there is no embassy in Ontario). I got a visa approval email from my school's admission and received the Authorisation habilitant les representation suisses a delivrer un visa (AE). I entered Switzerland without any questions asked and when I filled out the form for the B permit at school, no questions were asked either.

Re: Visa Authorization

Ok. Don't panic yet. Go in with your best "I'm so sorry I think I messed up face" if they ask you why there is not visa in your passport. Bring the email with you and say you thought that was all you needed. See what they say.

Whatever you do, don't yell at them! Be humble and ask them if they can help you. Ask them for their advice. Bureaucrats love that.

Start there and see what they say.

Your visa was approved. But what you received was merely notification that it was and you needed to get it stamped in your passport at the embassy. Did you not even read the instructions on the embassy's website?

"Once your visa has been approved, you will be informed by the immigration office and a file number (in German, ZEMIS, in French, SYMIC, in Italian, SIMIC) will be given to you. Please contact the Consulate for further instructions once you have received the file number or a confirmation that your visa has been approved."

As a Canadian you can come here as a tourist without needing a visa which is why no questions at the airport and the school would have been notified about the visa because unless the permit had already been approved the visa wouldn't have been issued. So they will expect that you've had the visa stamped in your passport already.

You have 14 days from your arrival in Switzerland to register for your permit, so get to it and hope the Vaud migration office will take pity on a confused Canadian. You do need to sort this out because a) otherwise you're here illegally once you pass the 3 month mark and b) depending on which school you're studying at they may not allow you to take up your course unless you can prove you have your visa in your passport.
