Proof that I am single...

Good afternoon!

I am getting married later this year in my home country of Scotland in a Catholic service. I am a non-Catholic marrying a Catholic.

As part of the preparation, we have to complete a form at our local church and provide some supporting documents. For me, this needs to be confirmation that I am legally single. The church asked me to reach out to the Zivilstandamt to get confirmation, so I ordered the confirmation (Zivilstandnachweis) online from the website in Bern.

Today I got an email back saying that as a foreigner I cannot order this and will need to ask in Scotland. I find this a little hard to believe as I have lived here for almost 8 years and have a C-Ausweis. The email I received back was from a 'praktikantin' so I am also a little cautious.

Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Any help will be much appreciated! The documents are needed to get permission to get married from the bishop, and I really don't want anything to go wrong. No proof I am single, no wedding

Re: Proof that I am single...

I needed to have a similar document when I got married and was told to get this in my birth country (the last place where I lived before moving away).
It was a request from the administration of the city where we wanted to get married, not the church though (am not Catholic).

Did you "sign out" when you left Scotland, or do you still have an address there? This will determine how much effort you have to put in to prove you're single.

I didn't officially "sign-out" and I still have a property there which is rented out, but I have no residential address.

Re: Proof that I am single...

After living for 8 years in Germany and ~6 months in Switzerland, they asked me for a 'i am not and never was married' certificate from my home country when I wanted to get married here.
So, I would say it is a standard procedure to ask for a document from your home country; or the country you have a passport from.

I also had to get that document (from South Africa).
I also didn`t "emigrate" - just left about ten years ago.
The country`s "Home Affairs" will have records of any marriage/divorce in your home country. This country will have their own records of your conduct here (CH).

You do not need a residential address in your home country - just your name and identity/passport number, and copies of any supporting documents you have.
The relevant Embassy/Consulate has the necessary application documents and can help with the process (mine did) - and forwarding of documents.

You can get this from the British Consulate in Bern. You have to go there, pay your money (see here for the costs) and promise really really properly (no fingers crossed behind your back) that you are not married. Then they give you the form.

Yes, it's ridiculous.

You're talking about the UK, not Switzerland. One doesn't really sign in or out there.

Re: Proof that I am single...

I was asked for this when I got married here in Switzerland. I couldn't get anything from the UK as I was not resident there. They accepted a wohnsitzbestätigung from the Gemeinde. You should be able to get it on a C-permit, I got it with an L permit.

I second this, it's what my son had to do a few years ago when he got married in Geneva (so in his case he went to the British Consulate in Geneva).

It doesn't exist any more - you have to go to Bern now.

Re: Proof that I am single...

The magic words are "Certificate of No Impediment", which you can request from the British embassy in Switzerland:

https://www.gov.uk/government/public...nd-nulla-ostas

Count yourself lucky -- if you were Catholic, you'd have to chase down "Letters of Freedom" from every parish where you've lived since you were 18.

This requirement is relatively simple by comparison.
