Contacting a canton

In another thread on this Forum I was wisely advised to contact my (future) canton to ask various questions. I am wondering, though, how that process works? Do I simply email them? And obviously in German, right? (zurich)

I am not in Switzerland yet.

You can email them in English. They will usually reply in German, sometimes in English. I've emailed the migration office and the work office before.
