US Au Pair Visas?

Hello,

I'd like to become an au pair in Switzerland, but I only have a US passport. I'm very confused about the au pair laws in Switzerland- everything I can find online says there are au pair visas, but people are saying that the Swiss Government changed the rules in 2015, and now US citizens cannot work in Switzerland. I've even heard that it varies by canton (i'm looking at St. Gallen).

Does anyone know the straight answer to this?

Re: US Au Pair Visas?

Do you already have a family in mind to work for? There are a lot of rules, and one of them is that foreign au pairs cannot speak the same language as the host family (one of the key reasons for coming is to learn German/french/italian...)

Re: US Au Pair Visas?

I've been in touch with a few families. The main reason I'd like to go is to learn German, so that wouldn't be a problem. But it sounds like CH changed the law very recently...

Re: US Au Pair Visas?

The Swiss Federal government has reduced the quota for foreign workers (outside EU) from the beginning of 2015. Kanton Zurich decided, based on that, not to give any more au pair visas to people outside EU. Some other kantons still do, depending on where your host family is. Please check this with your host family.

Re: US Au Pair Visas?

If you're a non-EU national you can only be employed as a nanny/domestic helper or an au pair via a Swiss government approved agency such as Profilia or Perfect Way.

http://www.perfectway.ch/en/for-fami...formation.html

http://www.profilia.ch/

"The Law on Foreign Nationals, in force since 1 January 2008, has introduced the following changes:
Au pairs from third countries (e.g. USA,Canada, Thailand, etc.) can only receive permits if they are placed through an agency which is approved and licensed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Currently there are only few such agencies specialising in the placement of au-pairs (e.g. profilia). However, we expect the number to increase throughout the year. Au pairs may now be placed only if they are between 18 to 25 years old."

Obviously, cantons can add their own rules on top of this as evidently Zurich has done.
