Working in Zurich, living in Schaffhausen?

Hi there,

I've finally (after much ado) been offered a job in Zurich and they seem to be terribly excited and want me to start on Monday (hooray! must pack!)

Because of the urgency, we will have to bunk with my boyfriend's rellies until we get our own place, who are in Schaffhausen.

Now, I've read conflicting things about the work permit (the B one I guess, which I think doubles as your residency permit).

So my questions are:
1. Can i live in one canton and work in another?
2. Can I pitch up at the authorities on Monday a.m. with my employment contract and passport and get processed and authorised the same day, or is this terribly naive wishful thinking?

Thanks so much for any help. I'm so excited!!!

1. Yes, no problem as you're an EU national.
2. Again yes, I think so. So long as you have your signed contract it shouldn't be a problem for you to start working so long as the permit processing is underway.

Is your boyfriend Swiss/EU national? I ask because co-habiting couples tend to be treated as individuals and not as a couple most of the time. If he doesn't already live here or is Swiss/EU you may find it difficult to bring him with you. You would need to apply for a concubine permit and part of the conditions for getting that is to have a place big enough for both of you. Also you'd need to be financially responsible for him for 5 years.

Re: Working in Zurich, living in Schaffhausen?

Will you commute by car or public transport?
Traffic from SH to ZRH in the morning and back in the afternoon can be a nightmare. I did that for 6 months and then decided to move nearer to ZRH.
The simple 38 kilometers from Neuhausen to Zurich could take 30 minutes, 60, 90, 120.................
Train connection is less flexible but has the advantage of being on time.
Good luck with the new job!

Oh Lord! Don't let him hear the words 'concubine' or 'financially responsible' or he'll start getting ideas!!
He's Swiss, so that's ok. He's the reason I'm coming over in the first place
Thanks so much!
