B permit expires tourist visa

Hello everyone,

This appears to be a pretty common problem that a lot of people have but I have scoured the forum and came across contradictory information.

My B permit expires at the end of this month and I need a couple more days in Switzerland to wrap things up. As I understand it, I am forced to immediately leave Switzerland on the exact day my contract/permit ends, which doesn't give me any time to tie up my remaining personal affairs in Switzerland (pack, move, etc.). However, if I deregister myself, I am "transferred" to a tourist visa and can remain in Switzerland for up to 3 months? I am a non-EU citizen, Australian.

Thanks a lot for clearing up some of this confusion!

Yes, that's it pretty much. Once you deregister you're no longer a resident here so go back to tourist status as you (Australian) don't need a visa to be here as a tourist.

Thanks for your reply, that's good news So I wouldn't have to leave the Schengen area and then return as a tourist? This is what I've heard some people say

Re: B permit expires tourist visa

Not that I've ever heard. When you deregister you'll get a document detailing it which can be used to cancel things like mobile phone contracts, etc, so if a border guard/police did query why you don't have your Swiss permit with you, you'd simply show that document proving you're no longer a resident. As you don't need a visa as a tourist I can't see that you'd need to leave the Schengen Area and then return again.

Yes, but you might still have early cancellation penalties to pay as stipulated in your contract. A lot of folks come here and get "free" phones by signing a 2-year contract and then for whatever reason they need to leave before the contract is up. The cancellation fee is not waived just because you're leaving early.
