Does the PhD years count for naturalisation?

I am here since 2005 as a PhD in EPFL and I finished in 2009. After that I start working as a post-doc till now. Does my 4 years of PhD count for the years for naturalisation?

Thanks!

Re: Does the PhD years count for naturalisation?

Might depend on whether it was a paid position or not. If paid possibly yes, if not possibly no. But I'm not au fait with this area so hopefully someone else on the forum who is will be able to answer you question more comprehensively.

Nope, nor for the C application. Otherwise many people would take their time on PHD get 6 years and then get the permit.

There may be cantonal differences here ( or maybe origin of applicant EU/non EU) but I personally know two people who have got C permits and one subsequent naturalisation ( and will do the official ceremony next month) who were both able to include the phd years.

The C permit holder has only ever been in Switzerland to do a phd and got the C permit at the end of 5 years (EU).
The newly naturalised ( non EU) came here to do a phd in Zurich, got a job here afterwards and qualified for naturalisation last year ( having obtained a C permit after 10 years here).

This is why I think it might depend on whether it's a paid position or not.

This really depends on the permit type. If registered as a student then the years do not normally count. If registered as an employee then they do count. As the subject has been asked to leave the country have to suspect it's the former."

Thread is from 2010 though so don't know if that would still be applicable or not.

Yes, all of it counts for naturalisation.

Once the new nationality law enters into force, you will need a C permit to apply for citizenship. If your are not an EU national, your time in the academia only counts towards a C permit after it is followed by a 2 year stay on an "ordinary" B permit.

Citizenship, see Chapter 4, Section 4.2.2.3 here:

C Permit, see Section 3.4.3.2 in the first document:
